Southeast Asia is home to some of the top basketball teams in the world. In this blog, we’ll take a look at the top five teams in the region and what makes them so successful.

The Philippines

The Philippines has a few very good Basketball teams Among them are the San Miguel Beermen, the Magnolia Hotshots, and the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters.

The San Miguel Beermen are currently the top team in the Philippines. They have won the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) championship a record 26 times. The Magnolia Hotshots are second with 10 championships, while the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters have won two championships.

Indonesia

Indonesia has been a powerhouse in the basketball scene in Southeast Asia for many years. The Indonesian National basketball team has won a number of titles in the SEA Games and the country’s professional league, the IBL, is one of the most competitive in the region.

Some of Indonesia’s top clubs include Satria Muda Pertamina Jakarta, Pelita Jaya Bakrie, and Garuda Bandung. These teams regularly compete in the ASEAN Basketball League (ABL), and have had success in international competitions like the FIBA Asia Champions Cup and the SEABA Champions Cup.

Malaysia

Malaysia’s top team is KL Dragons, who compete in the ASEAN Basketball league The Dragons are based in Kuala Lumpur and play their home games at the MABA Stadium. They have been in the league since its inaugural season in 2009/10 and have made the playoffs every year since then, reaching the ABL Finals in 2013.

Singapore

The Phuket Beast are a semi-professional team that plays in Thailand’s Division I, the country’s second-tier Basketball League They are one of the Top Teams in their division, and have won numerous championships over their history.

The Pattaya Piranhas are a recreational team that plays in Thailand’s Pattaya Basketball Association (PBA), which is one of the country’s top Recreational Basketball leagues. They have won numerous championships over their history, and are one of the most successful teams in the league.

Vietnam

Vietnam’s top basketball teams compete in the country’s Professional Basketball league, the VBA. The VBA was founded in 2016, and the league’s first season took place in 2017. The league is made up of eight teams, all of which are based in Vietnam.

The league’s current champion is the Hanoi Buffaloes, who have won two VBA titles. The Buffaloes are one of two teams based in Hanoi, along with the Hanoi Stallions. Other teams in the league include the Saigon Heat, Ho Chi Minh City Wings, Danang Dragons, Can Tho Catfish, Hai Phong Green Wings, and Quang Ngai Bulls.

Cambodia

Cambodia is home to some of the top basketball teams in Southeast Asia. The national team has competed in several international tournaments, and the country’s club teams are consistently ranked among the best in the region.

Cambodian basketball first gained notoriety on the international stage in the early 2000s, when the National Team qualified for the FIBA Asia Championship for the first time. Since then, Cambodia has continued to compete at a high level, with several top-10 finishes in regional tournaments.

The Cambodian club teams are also consistently among the best in Southeast Asia. In recent years both Phnom Penh-based clubs – Royal Tiger Basketball Club and 7-Eleven Tiger Basketball Club – have won multiple Regional Championships

Laos

Laos is a small country in Southeast Asia, but it has a Ning Basketball scene. The sport is popular among the youth, and there are several top club teams in the country.

The Lao National Basketball team has been competing internationally since 2007, and has had some success, particularly in 2015 when they won the Bronze medal at the SEA Games The team is coached by American-born John Elliott, who has been living in Laos since 2010.

Burma

Although Burma is not as well known for its basketball teams as some other Southeast Asian countries, it still has a few noteworthy teams that have gained recognition in the region.

The most successful team from Burma is the Yatanabon National basketball team which is based in the city of Mandalay. The team has won the Southeast Asian Basketball Association (SEABA) Championship four times, in 2009, 2012, 2013, and 2014.

Other notable teams from Burma include theYangon City Steamers, who compete in Myanmar’s National Basketball League and the Mandalay Hawks, who play in the Mandalay Regional League.

Brunei

Brunei Darussalam, an island nation located on the West Coast of the island of Borneo in Southeast Asia, has a relatively small basketball scene but has steadily been growing over the past few years. The Brunei national Basketball team has shown some promise in recent years most notably when they finished in 5th place at the 2015 SEA Games. They will look to build on that success in the coming years as they continue to develop their young talent. Some of Brunei’s Top Players include:
