St. Bonaventure’s men’s basketball team has enjoyed a resurgence in recent years under the leadership of coach Mark Schmidt Schmidt took over the program in 2011 and has compiled a record of 119-106 over his seven seasons at the helm.
During his time at St. Bonaventure, Schmidt has guided the Bonnies to four consecutive winning seasons, including a school-record 27-win campaign in 2015-16. In his second season as Head Coach of the St. Bonaventure men’s Basketball team Mark Schmidt has compiled a record of 20-12. His team’s success is due in part to his experience as a former head coach at George Mason University, where he led the Patriots to four consecutive NCAA tournament appearances. Schmidt’s teams are known for their strong defense, and this season the Bonnies are allowing just 63.4 points per game which ranks them ninth in the country. Schmidt sat down with us recently to discuss his coaching philosophy and how he has been able to turn the Bonnies into a winning program.
“I think the most important thing for any coach is to have a clear vision of what you want your team to be,” Schmidt said. “For me, that means having a tough, disciplined team that plays hard every night and gives our fans something to be proud of. I also think it’s important to have a good understanding of what your strengths and weaknesses are as a team, and to build your gameplan around those things.”
When asked about his favorite part of coaching, Schmidt said he enjoys watching his players grow and develop over the course of a season. “It’s gratifying to see the progress our guys make from the beginning of the year until the end,” he said. “We ask a lot of our guys on both ends of the floor, and it’s great to see them improve as we work towards our ultimate goal of winning a conference championship ”
