The Latest on Stamford Baseball: Analysis

It has been nearly two weeks since the last time the Stamford baseball team played a game. And while there has been no official word from the school or the team, it seems likely that the season is over.

This is a shame, because Stamford was one of the most improved teams in all of Connecticut this year. After going just 5-15 last season, the Black Knights turned things around in a big way in 2019, winning 12 games and qualifying for the Class LL State Tournament

What made Stamford’s run even more impressive was that it came without any real star power. The team’s best player, senior second baseman Matt Rugge, was a solid player but not someone who was going to put up eye-popping numbers.

The rest of the lineup was mostly made up of players who were good but not great. That includes senior shortstop Jake Roberts, who hit .270 with a .340 on-base percentage and junior pitcher Anthony Delfino, who went 5-3 with a 3.41 ERA.

So how did Stamford turn things around so quickly? A big part of it was simply that the team got better as the season went along. After starting 2-6, the Black Knights won 10 of their final 12 games to close out the regular season and earn a spot in the State Tournament

In addition, Head Coach John Piazza did an excellent job of getting his players to buy into his system and play as a team. That’s something that can be difficult to do with High School kids, but it clearly paid off for Stamford this season.

The Black Knights will lose some key seniors from this year’s team, but they have a lot of young talent coming back. With another year under Piazza’s tutelage, Stamford should be even better next season and will be a team to watch out for in 2020.
