Stephenville Baseball: A Texas Tradition
For over a hundred years, baseball has been a cherished pastime in the Lone Star State And Stephenville is no exception. The city has a long and storied history when it comes to the sport, dating back to the early 1900s.
Baseball first came to Stephenville in 1904, when a local team called the “Athletics” was formed. The team played its games on a makeshift diamond located on what is now North McDonald Street. In those early days, the game was far from perfect – one reporter noted that “the local nine would have made a good showing if they had only had three outs instead of nine.”
But Stephenville’s love for the game only grew stronger over time. In May of 1907, construction began on a new baseball park that would become known as “ Athletic Park.” The park was located just north of where Tarleton State University stands today. It featured bleachers that could seat up to 500 fans, and it quickly became the center of Stephenville’s baseball universe.
Throughout the early years of the twentieth century, Stephenville fielded several different semi-professional and amateur baseball teams. The most successful of these was the “Stephenville Nine,” which won several championships in the 1920s and 1930s.
In 1940, however, Stephenville’s baseball tradition nearly came to an end. That year, Athletic Park burned to the ground in a devastating fire. Fortunately, the city rebounded quickly – by 1941, a new ballpark had been built on West Washington Street and baseball was back in Full Swing
