The History of TCU Baseball

TCU baseball has a rich tradition dating back to the early 1900s. The Horned Frogs have been one of the most successful programs in the country, winning multiple conference championships and appearing in numerous NCAA tournaments. TCU has produced many Major League Baseball players, including two-time World Series champion Jim Sundberg.

TCU has a long history of success on the diamond, dating back to its days as a member of the West Conference The Horned Frogs won eight conference championships in the SWC, including five straight from 1984-88. TCU also won two conference titles in the Big 12 (2010, 2014) and has made 18 NCAA Tournament appearances, most recently in 2018.

TCU has had dozens of players go on to play professional baseball includingSundberg, Lance Broadway, Jake Arrieta, Brandon Finnegan, Andrew Cashner and Matt Carpenter Sundberg is the only TCU player to win a World Series title, doing so with the Kansas City Royals in 1985 and 1987.

Since TCU joined the Big 12 Conference in 2013, the team has seen a marked increase in success. In fact, TCU has won more conference games than any other team in the Big 12 over that span.

But Head Coach Jim Schlossnagle and his staff are not content to rest on their laurels. They are always looking for ways to improve and take the program to even greater heights.

One area they would like to see improvement in is postseason play. TCU has made the NCAA tournament in each of the past four seasons, but they have yet to make it to the College World Series

To that end, Schlossnagle has made some changes to his Coaching Staff for the upcoming season He has brought in two new assistant coaches Ryan Wood and Kirk Saarloos. Both coaches bring a wealth of experience and knowledge to the program and will no doubt help TCU take that next step.

Assistant coaches Randy Mazey and Kirk Saarloos have also played a major role in the success of the program. Mazey, who joined the staff in 2009, has helped lead the team to five conference championships and six NCAA tournament appearances. Saarloos, who came to TCU in 2012, has been instrumental in the development of pitchers such as Tyler Alexander and Trey Teakell.
