NHL Entry Draft

The NHL Entry Draft is an annual event in which every team in the league drafted eligible players who have turned 18 years old by September 15th in the year of the draft. The draft order is determined by the previous season’s standings, with non-playoff teams drafting first, followed by the teams that made the playoffs, with the specific order determined by how far each team advanced in the playoffs.

For example, the Stanley Cup champion always drafts last. The NHL Entry Draft is held over two days, with rounds 1 through 7 on day one and rounds 8 through 9 on day two. In recent years however, many teams have chosen to trade their draft picks for established players or prospects from other teams.

Expansion

The Tampa Bay Lightning are a professional Ice Hockey team based in Tampa, Florida. They are members of the Atlantic Division of the Eastern Conference of the National Hockey League (NHL). The Lightning have one Stanley Cup championship in their history, in 2004. The team is often referred to as the Bolts, and the nickname was painted on the back of their jerseys beginning with the 2014–15 NHL season

The Lightning were founded in 1992 as an expansion team by Neal Pilson, then-owner of World Championship Wrestling. In June 2010, Jeff Vinik agreed to purchase the Lightning from Oren Koules and Len Barrie. Pilson had brought NHL Hockey back to Tampa two years earlier with the purchase of the Tampa Bay Rowdies, who became the Tampa Bay Lightning when they assumed control of his arena lease at Expo Hall in September 1992.
