Five-Star Basketball recruit Amir Coffey decommitted from the University of Minnesota on Monday Night announcing his decision on Twitter.
Coffey, a 6-foot-8 small forward from Hopkins, is ranked No. 18 in the Class of 2016 by ESPN. He committed to the Gophers in September 2014.
“I would like to thank coach Pitino and the Minnesota staff for everything,” Coffey wrote on Twitter. “After careful consideration I have decided to decommit from the University of Minnesota ”
Coffey’s decision leaves Minnesota with one five-star recruit in its 2016 class: center Daniel Oturu who committed last month.
Why the decommitment occurred
It is not uncommon for a 5-Star recruit to decommit from a school. In fact, it happens quite often. The main reason for a decommitment is usually because the recruit feels like he or she could find a better fit somewhere else, either academically or athletically.
In the case of UC basketball recruit, the decommitment occurred because the player felt like he could find a better fit academically and athletically elsewhere.
How the school is reacting
The 5-star recruit’s decision has left the school’s Basketball Program in a state of uncertainty. While the school is trying to figure out what to do next, they are also trying to keep calm and not let the situation get out of hand.
The impact on the team
The decommitment of a five-star recruit has a big impact on the team. Other recruits may see that the school is not committed to the player and decide to decommit as well. This can create a domino effect that hurts the team’s chances of getting other top recruits
What this means for the future of recruiting
On Tuesday, top 5-star recruit Kyree Walker decommitted from the University of Maryland where he had been committed since August. The 6’4 guard from Baltimore is now the highest-ranked uncommitted player in the country.
This is big news in the world of college Basketball Recruiting It’s not often that a player of Walker’s caliber decides to back out of his commitment so late in the process. Usually, by this time of year, most of the top recruits have already committed to a school and are just waiting to sign their National Letter of Intent
So what does this mean for the future of recruiting? It’s hard to say for sure, but it could signal a shift in the way top recruits view the recruiting process Up until now, most recruits have been content to commit to a school early on and then wait until Signing Day to make it official. But with Walker’s decommitment, we may start seeing more and more recruits choosing to wait until closer to Signing Day to make their final decision.
This could lead to even more drama and suspense on signing day, which is always a big day in the world of college sports So if you’re a fan of college basketball recruiting, be sure to keep an eye on Kyree Walker and see where he eventually ends up signing.
