2019-2020 UMass Hockey Roster Incoming Freshmen

The UMass Hockey Team welcomes six freshmen to the 2019-2020 roster:

forwards Jakob Forsbacka Karlsson, John Leonard, and Dylan Sikura, defensemen Callum Booth and Mario Ferraro, and goaltender Matt Murray.

Jakob Forsbacka Karlsson, a Boston Bruins draft pick returns to his home state of Massachusetts after spending the last two seasons with Providence College He will look to make an immediate impact on the Minutemen’s offense.

John Leonard comes to UMass from the United States Hockey League’s Dubuque Fighting Saints, where he was a key player in their run to the Clark Cup Finals A versatile forward, he will add depth to the Minutemen’s lineup.

Dylan Sikura joins his brother Tyler on the UMass roster after spending the last four years with Northeastern University. A skilled offensive player he will look to make an impact on the Power play

Callum Booth comes to UMass from the Quebec Major Junior hockey League’s Quebec Remparts, where he was named one of the league’s top prospects He is a big body who can move the puck well and should make an immediate impact on the Minutemen’s defense.

Mario Ferraro joins UMass from Des Moines of the USHL, where he was named a Second Team All-Star last season. An offensively gifted defenseman, he should help power the Minutemen’s attack from the blue line

Matt Murray comes to UMass from Merrimack College where he was named Hockey East Rookie of the Year last season. He will compete for time in net with incumbent starter Ryan Wischow.

2019-2020 UMass Hockey Roster: Departing Players

Forward Bobby Trivigno and defenseman Cale Makar have both decided to forgo their final two years of college eligibility and will sign professional contracts. Trivigno, who was drafted by the Columbus Blue Jackets in the seventh round of the 2018 NHL Entry Draft signed a three-year, entry-level contract with the Blue Jackets on Tuesday. Makar, who was drafted by the Colorado Avalanche in the first round of the 2017 NHL Entry Draft agreed to terms on an entry-level contract with the Avalanche on Monday.

In addition, forward Zac Jones and defenseman Mario Ferraro have both decided to leave school early and will sign professional contracts. Jones, who was drafted by the New York Rangers in the third round of the 2019 NHL Entry Draft has agreed to terms on an entry-level contract with the Rangers. Ferraro, who was undrafted, has signed a two-year entry-level contract with the San Jose Sharks

2019-2020 UMass Hockey Roster: Outlook

The UMass Minutemen are looking to rebound after a disappointing season in which they failed to make the NCAA tournament They will be led by returning top scorers Marc Del Gaizo and Bobby Trivigno. goaltender Filip Lindberg will also be back to man the net after a stellar freshman campaign. Additions to the roster for this season include freshmen Matthewggerty, Jake Gaudet, and defensemen Zac Jones and Marc Del Gaizo. The team will look to compete for a spot in the NCAA Tournament this season.

2019-2020 UMass Hockey Roster: Results

The 2019-2020 UMass Hockey schedule features 31 games, with conference opponents Northeastern, Boston College and Providence making up 22 of those games. The Huskies will also take on Merrimack, BU, Holy Cross UNH, and UConn in non-conference action. The team will look to build on their success from last season when they made it to the Hockey East Championship game for the first time in program history.

Head coach Greg Carvel has put together a talented roster that features 12 NHL Draft picks, including forwards Mitchell Chaffee (Minnesota Wild) and Bobby Kaiser (Buffalo Sabres). The team will also be led by captain and defenseman Cale Makar, who is widely considered one of the best college hockey players in the country. Makar was drafted fourth overall by the Colorado Avalanche in the 2017 NHL Draft and is expected to make an impact at the professional level once he completes his collegiate career.

2019-2020 UMass Hockey Roster: Statistics

The 2019-2020 UMass Hockey Roster features twelve forwards, six defensemen, and two goaltenders. The team is made up of six seniors, four juniors, five sophomores, and three freshmen.

The leading scorer from last season, senior Mitchell Chaffee, returns for his final year. Chaffee was third in the nation in goals (22) and points (38) last season. Joining him up front are fellow seniors John Leonard and Nolan Vesey. Leonard is coming off a career-high 15-point season, while Vesey looks to build on a solid junior campaign in which he tallied 11 points.

On defense, the Minutemen will be led by senior captain Cale Makar. Makar was named a First Team All-American and a Hobey Baker Finalist last season after leading all NCAA defenseman in points (49). Joining him on the blue line are junior Mario Ferraro and sophomores Zac Jones and Filip Lindberg. Ferraro is coming off a breakout sophomore season in which he notched 24 points, while Lindberg will look to build on a solid freshman campaign that saw him go 12-5-2 with a 2.67 GAA and .913 save percentage

In goal, the Minutemen will once again be led by sophomore Filip Lindberg. Lindberg was named the Hockey East Rookie of the Year last season after going 12-5-2 with a 2.67 GAA and .913 save percentage. He will be backed up by junior netminder Henry Dill.(*goaltending statistics from 2018-2019)
