UNLV Hockey: A Team on the Rise

Introduction

The UNLV Hockey Team is a NCAA Division III team that competes in the West Region of the American Collegiate Hockey Association (ACHA). The team is comprised of student-athletes from all over the world, with a strong representation from Canada. The team practices and plays its home games at the City National Arena, located in Summerlin, Nevada.

The UNLV Hockey team has seen a rise in success in recent years thanks in part to the hard work and dedication of its student-athletes, coaches, and staff. In the 18-19 season the team won its first ever ACHA West Region championship, and advanced to the ACHA National Tournament for the first time in program history. The team’s run came to an end in the round of 16 at the hands of top-seeded Penn State but not before putting up a good fight.

The Team

The Rink

The Rink has a capacity of 2,500 people and features a regulation size Hockey Rink locker rooms offices, and a concessions area. The Rink is also home to the UNLV Hockey Hall of Fame

The Fans

Despite the fact that the team is not one of the traditional powers in college hockey the fans are passionate and knowledgeable about the sport. The Schedule

This season, the UNLV Hockey Team will face some of the best teams in the country. They will travel to play schools like Minnesota, Michigan, and Colorado. They will also host tough opponents like Arizona State and Nebraska. The schedule is demanding, but the team is excited for the challenge.

The Rivals

But in recent years another team has been on the rise and making a name for itself in the college hockey world: the University of Nevada Las Vegas (UNLV).

UNLV has been a Division I program since 1991 and plays in the National Collegiate Hockey conference (NCHC), which is widely considered to be one of the best conferences in college hockey In just their third season in the conference, UNLV finished second in the regular season standings and made it all the way to the semifinals of the NCHC tournament.

The UNLV Hockey Team has come a long way in a short amount of time, and they shows no signs of slowing down. With a core group of young talent and a bright future ahead, UNLV is quickly becoming a team to watch out for on the national stage.

The Standings

The UNLV Hockey team is currently in 5th place in the ACHA Southwest Division with a record of 12-9-1. They are just behind Arizona State who is in 4th place. The top 4 teams in the division make the playoffs. To make the playoffs, UNLV will need to finish in 4th place or better. If they can do that, they will have a chance to make a run at the ACHA National Championship

The Playoffs

The Championships

In just the team’s third season of existence, the UNLV Rebels have made an impressive run to the Championship game of the American Collegiate Hockey Association’s Division III tournament. The Rebels will face off against Northeastern University on Saturday, March 11th in what promises to be an exciting game.

UNLV has been led all season by their strong defense and goaltending. The team has only allowed 2.42 goals per game good for second in the nation. In net, freshman goaltender CJ Schneider has been outstanding, posting a .935 save percentage and a 1.90 goals against average. Schneider will need to be at his best again if the Rebels are going to come away with a win.

The offense has also been very good for UNLV, averaging 3.83 goals per game, which is ninth in the country. The leading scorer is sophomore forward Austin Mayer, who has 18 goals and 16 assists for 34 points. Mayer will need to continue his strong play if the Rebels are going to have a chance at winning their first ever National Championship
