In recent years Warwick has continued to be one of the top basketball programs in the country, consistently ranked among the top 25 teams in both the AP Poll and Coaches Poll The team has won multiple conference championships and made several appearances in the NCAA tournament most recently reaching the Elite Eight in 2020.

The Dominance of the Eighties: Winning it All

In the early eighties, the Warwick basketball team quickly became a force to be reckoned with. With their winning ways, the team gained recognition not just in their home state of Rhode Island but across the nation. Led by Coach Jim Calhoun, the team won an unprecedented three NCAA Division I Men’s basketball championships in a row from1981-1983. In 1990, the team won its first conference championship in over 20 years. The following year, the team made it to the State Tournament for the first time in school history.

The team continued to see success in the early 1990s, winning another Conference Championship in 1992 and making it back to the state tournament in 1993. In 1994, the team had its best season in school history, finishing with a record of 26-1. The only loss came in the state championship game, which was eventually won by Hazelwood East.

Despite not winning a state title, the early 1990s were a successful period for Warwick basketball. The team finally began to see some success on the court after years of rebuilding.

The New Millennium: From the NIT to the NCAA

After a few down years in the late 1990s, the Warwick basketball team rebounded in a big way in the new millennium. In 2001, they won the National Invitational Tournament (NIT), one of the most prestigious postseason tournaments in college basketball This was a sign of things to come, as they would go on to make the NCAA tournament five times in the next decade. They also won the conference tournament four times during this period. It was a true golden age for Warwick basketball.

The Current Era: Sustained Success
