Founded in 1909, the Canadiens are the longest continuously operating professional ice hockey team worldwide, and the only existing NHL club to predate the founding of the NHL. One of the oldest North American professional sports franchises, the Canadiens’ history predates that of every other Canadian franchise outside football as well as every American franchise outside baseball and basketball. The franchise is one of just seven existing teams which predate their sport’s first professional league; along with baseball’s Cincinnati Reds and Boston Red Sox; basketball’s New York Knicks; football’s Green Bay Packers; soccer’s Chicago Fire FC (formerly Chicago Fire); and lacrosse’s Boston Cannons (formerly Boston Blazers).
The Canadiens have won more Stanley Cup championship titles than any other franchise. They have won 24 Stanley Cups, 23 of which came between 1916 and 1960 with two more in 1965 and 1979. Since 1996, Montreal has played in 28 Stanley Cup Finals appearances, winning 10 times – most recently in 1993 – tying them for second place overall with Toronto behind Detroit’s 11 wins in 26 appearances since 1957.
