The Charlotte Hornets
Team History
The Charlotte Hornets are an American professional basketball team based in Charlotte, North Carolina. The Hornets compete in the National Basketball Association (NBA), as a member of the league’s Eastern Conference Southeast Division. The team is owned by retired NBA player Michael Jordan, who acquired a controlling interest in the franchise in 2010. The Hornets play their home games at Spectrum Center in Uptown Charlotte.
The Hornets began play as an expansion team in 1988, based in Charlotte. Led by All-Star guard Glen Rice, hornets qualified for the playoffs seven times in their first 23 seasons of existence. However, the team failed to make the playoffs after the 2005–06 season; this was partly due to injuries to key players such as Rice and Jamal Mashburn. The hornets ceased operations following the 2002–03 season due to mounting financial losses; NBA Commissioner David Stern then officially announced the NBA would return to Charlotte through an expansion team (also known as the “Bobcats”) that would later debut in 2004. In 2012, NBA owners voted unanimously to approve a plan paving way for Shinn’s estate to sell controlling interest of team to basketball legend Michael Jordan who then became majority owner of hornets organization.
In May 2014, it was announced that the Charlotte Bobcats would be renamed back to the Charlotte Hornets, resurrecting the original name and records of the 1988–2002 hornets following New Orleans’ relinquishment of control over both “Hornets” trademarks and associated history following their change to Pelicans in 2013.
