The team began to play their home games at Shea Stadium in 1964 and have continued to play there since. The Jets advanced to the playoffs for the first time in 1968 and went on to compete in Super Bowl III where they defeated the Baltimore Colts, becoming the first AFL team to defeat an NFL club in an AFL–NFL World Championship Game. Since 1968, the Jets have appeared in 13 playoff games, and four AFC Championship Games (1982, 1998, 2009 & 2010), but lost each one. However, they have never returned to the Super Bowl following their victory in Super Bowl III or later appearances. Besides their divisional rivals, historical rivals include: Miami Dolphins (since 1966), Buffalo Bills (since 1960) and Baltimore Ravens (since 1996).

Some of the most notable players in Jets history include Joe Namath, who was the first quarterback to ever be named Super Bowl MVP; Darrelle Revis, who is considered one of the best cornerbacks of his generation; and “Broadway” Joe Walsh, one of the most popular players in team history.

The team began to play in 1960 at the Polo Grounds. Under new ownership, the current name was adopted three years later and the franchise moved to Shea Stadium in 1964 and then to Giants Stadium in 1984. Eight years later, following the lead of many other AFL teams who by then had switched to NFL insignia and colors by adopting blue and white as their primary colors, they changed those colors on their home field to green and white; three years after that they dropped black from their uniform color palette altogether.
The team has appeared in Super Bowl III and Super Bowl XII; both times under head coach Weeb Ewbank – winning Super Bowl III but losing Super Bowl XII – plus Super Bowl XLVIII as AFC East champions led by current head coach Rex Ryan; that game also resulted in a loss for them against their crosstown rivals, the Seattle Seahawks by a score of 43–8; they have never played another AFC East opponent (the Patriots) in a Super Bowl despite sharing a division with them since 1970 when Miami was originally placed into that division upon their expansion into the league; Miami would win two Super Bowls during that time frame – VII and VIII – while New England would win five – XXXI, XXXVI,XXXVIII XXXIX and XLIX with all five wins coming against NFC opponents – Packers (twice), Rams (twice) & Panthers). Prior to 1968, they were also one of only three NFL teams (out of 16 total at that time) that did not have corporate sponsorship on their helmets; this changed when Carroll Rosenbloom brought forth an offer from Norton Simon Inc., an aluminum company based out of California who put its “Norton” brand name decal on player helmets for $50 per helmet at 5% equity stake for any future profits Norton Simon might make should it ever sell its stake or be involved with any future sale transaction related to said stake; this offer was accepted by Rosenbloom and Simon held onto its stake until 1981 when it sold its stake back to then-current owner Leon Hess for $1 million thereby allowing Hess full ownership of 100% equity stake within team organization once again).
