What NFL Teams Have Never Been to the Super Bowl?

Wondering what NFL teams have never been to the Super Bowl? Here’s a list of all 32 teams and their appearances in the big game.

Introduction

Since the first Super Bowl was played in 1967, there have been 51 games played. Of those 51 games, only 31 different NFL teams have made an appearance. Of the current 32 NFL teams, 12 have never been to the Super Bowl. This leaves 20 NFL teams that have made at least one appearance in the Super Bowl. Below is a list of the NFL teams that have never been to the Super Bowl.

The Arizona Cardinals

The Arizona Cardinals are a professional American football franchise based in the Phoenix metropolitan area. The Cardinals compete in the National Football League (NFL) as a member club of the league’s National Football Conference (NFC) West division. The Cardinals were founded as the Morgan Athletic Club in 1898, and are the oldest continuously run professional football team in the United States. The Cardinals play their home games at State Farm Stadium, which opened in 2006 and is located in Glendale, Arizona. Since joining the NFL as an expansion team in 1920, the franchise has won two NFL championships, both while it was based in Chicago.

The Cardinals have been to only one Super Bowl, which was Super Bowl XLIII, during the 2008 season. They lost 27–23 to the Pittsburgh Steelers.

The Detroit Lions

The Detroit Lions have never been to the Super Bowl. The Lions have won four NFL Championships, but they all came before the Super Bowl era. The most recent was in 1957.

The Houston Texans

The Houston Texans are a professional American football team based in Houston, Texas. The Texans compete in the National Football League (NFL) as a member club of the American Football Conference (AFC) South division. The team plays its home games at NRG Stadium in downtown Houston.

The Texans joined the NFL in 2002 as an expansion team after Houston’s previous franchise, the Houston Oilers, relocated to Nashville, Tennessee, where they were renamed the Tennessee Titans. The team’s majority owner is Bob McNair. The head coach is Bill O’Brien, and the general manager is Brian Gaine.

The Texans have never been to the Super Bowl.

The Jacksonville Jaguars

The Jacksonville Jaguars have never been to the Super Bowl. The Jaguars joined the NFL as an expansion team in 1995. The team has made it to the playoffs seven times, but has never made it to the Super Bowl.

The New Orleans Saints

The New Orleans Saints have never been to the Super Bowl. They lost to the Los Angeles Rams in the NFC Championship game in 2018.

The Cleveland Browns

The Cleveland Browns are a professional American football team based in Cleveland, Ohio. The Browns compete in the National Football League (NFL) as a member club of the American Football Conference (AFC) North division. The Browns play their home games at FirstEnergy Stadium, which opened in 1999, with administrative offices and training facilities in Berea, Ohio. The Browns’ official colors are brown, orange, and white. They are unique among the 32 member franchises of the NFL in that they do not have a logo on their helmets and are the only team named after a specific person, original coach Paul Brown.

The franchise was founded in 1945 by businessman Arthur B. McBride and coach Paul Brown as a charter member of the All-America Football Conference (AAFC). The Browns dominated the AAFC, compiling a 47–4–3 record in the league’s four seasons and winning its championship in each of them. When the AAFC folded after the 1949 season, the Browns joined the NFL along with three other AAFC teams – the San Francisco 49ers, the original Baltimore Colts, and the New York Yankees (now defunct). Cleveland was awarded a franchise in 1950.
