The Rock’s return to WWE
In February of 2013, The Rock made a highly anticipated return to WWE after eight years away from the company. He had left WWE in 2004 to focus on his Hollywood career, which by that point had already begun to take off. Over the next few years, he would go on to star in a number of blockbuster films, including “The Rundown,” “Walking Tall,” “Gridiron Gang,” “The Game Plan,” and, of course, “The Tooth Fairy.”
While The Rock was away from WWE, the company went through some major changes. In 2005, Vince McMahon sold WWE to a publicly traded company called World Wrestling Entertainment, Inc. (later shortened to just WWE). This marked the first time in WWE’s history that it was not owned by a McMahon. The company also began producing its own films through its new subsidiary, WWE Studios.
In 2009, The Rock made a surprise appearance at WrestleMania 25, where he had a highly anticipated match with his longtime rival, John Cena. This would be the first time The Rock had stepped into a WWE ring in over six years. Though he was away from the company for most of the 2000s, his star power only grew during that time. His return to WWE was greeted with great excitement by fans all over the world.
The Rock would go on to make sporadic appearances for WWE over the next few years, culminating in his return full-time in 2013. He has since become one of WWE’s top stars once again and continues to appear on TV and pay-per-views on a regular basis.
