The NCAA Division I Baseball Championship is a 64-team, double-elimination tournament. Thirty-one conference champions earn automatic berths into the tournament, with the remaining 33 berths going to at-large bids. The top-eight national seeds will host each of the 16 four-team, double-elimination regionals.
What are the NCAA Baseball Regionals?
The NCAA Division I Baseball Championship is an annual 64-team tournament that takes place each spring, culminating in the College World Series (CWS). The CWS is a double-elimination tournament where the final two teams play each other in a best-of-three series to decide the national champion.
The NCAA baseball regular season runs from late February/early March through early May. Each team’s regular season schedule is made up of mostly conference games, although some non-conference games are typically scheduled as well. After the regular season, conference tournaments are held to determine which teams will receive an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament.
The 64 teams that make up the NCAA baseball tournament field are split into 16 four-team, double-elimination regionals. The regionals are spread out across the country, with four regionals played at each of four different sites. The four regional winners at each site advance to one of eight best-of-three super regionals, which are effectively a mini version of the CWS. The eight super regional winners advance to Omaha for the CWS.
How do the NCAA Baseball Regionals work?
The NCAA Division I baseball tournament starts with 64 teams. The field is then divided into 16 four-team, double-elimination regionals. The winners of each regional advance to one of eight best-of-three super regionals, which are also double-elimination. The winners of each super regional move on to the College World Series in Omaha, Nebraska.
