When Does the NFL Start This Year?

The National Football League (NFL) regular season begins on Thursday, September 10th.

Introduction

The National Football League (NFL) is the most popular professional American football league in the United States. It was formed in 1920 as the American Professional Football Association (APFA) before renaming itself the National Football League for the 1922 season. The NFL agreed to merge with the American Football League (AFL) in 1966, and the first Super Bowl was held at the end of that season; the merger was completed in 1970. Today, the NFL has the highest average attendance (67,591) of any professional sports league in the world and is the most popular sports league in America.

The regular season

The regular season of the National Football League (NFL) begins on the weekend following Labor Day.

Labor Day in the United States is a public holiday celebrated on the first Monday in September. It honors the American labor movement and the contributions that workers have made to the strength, prosperity, laws, and social welfare of the country.

The NFL regular season typically runs from early September to late December, with each team playing 16 games and having one bye week.

The preseason

The National Football League (NFL) preseason is the period each year during which professional football teams play exhibition games before the regular season starts.
A typical preseason schedule features each team playing four exhibition games, with two at home and two away. The exhibition season generally begins in early August, and ends in late August or early September.
The NFL’s regular season typically kicks off on the Thursday night following Labor Day, with the first full slate of games taking place on Sunday.

The playoffs

The NFL playoffs are a single-elimination tournament held after the end of the National Football League (NFL)’s regular season to determine the NFL champion. Six teams from each of the league’s two conferences qualify for the playoffs based on regular season records, and four division winners are seeded 1 through 4 in their conference, with the remaining two teams qualifying for wild card berths. The playoffs are not conducted in a fixed bracket format; unlike Major League Baseball’s Division Series, LDS, and League Championship Series, and the NBA’s Eastern and Western Conference Finals, higher still qualify for next round repsectively. There is no minimum number of games needed to be played by a team in order to qualify for the playoffs.

The Super Bowl

The NFL season officially begins on the Thursday night before the first Sunday of the season, with the annual kickoff game. The 2020 NFL season will begin on Thursday, September 10. However, the regular season schedule will not be released until mid-April.
