When Does Regular Season Baseball Start?
Contents
The regular season for Major League Baseball typically starts around the end of March and can go until the beginning of October.
When is Opening Day?
Major League Baseball’s (MLB) regular season starts in late March/early April and ends in October.
Opening day is the first day of the regular season. MLB teams generally play 162 games each, for a total of 2,430 games.
Why is the start date of the season important?
The start of the regular season is important because it determines which teams will make the playoffs. The playoffs are a single-elimination tournament that takes place after the regular season. The team with the best record in each league (American and National) gets a bye in the first round. The next two best teams in each league play each other in the first round.
How has the start date of the season changed over time?
The regular season for Major League Baseball (MLB) typically starts in early April and ends in late September or early October, with each team playing 162 games. However, the start date of the season has changed several times throughout MLB’s history, most notably as a result of labor stoppages.
The first ever MLB game was played on April 22, 1876 between the Philadelphia Athletics and the Boston Red Stockings. The regular season started just a few days later on April 25th. At this time, there was no set length for the regular season, but most teams played between 60 and 65 games.
This all changed in 1884 when the length of the season was set at 140 games. The start date of the season was also moved up to mid-April. However, there were still no rules in place regarding when the season could end. As a result, some teams played as late as November.
Finally, in 1903, the start date of the regular season was fixed at April 15th and the end date was set at October 15th. This rule remained in place for almost 60 years until it was unilaterally changed by MLB commissioner Bowie Kuhn in 1961. Kuhn moved the start date up to April 10th without consulting with the Major League Baseball Players Association (MLBPA).
The MLBPA wasn’t too happy about this change and filed a grievance against Kuhn in 1963. An arbitration panel sided with the MLBPA and ruled that Kuhn had acted outside of his authority when he made the change without consulting with them first. As a result, they ordered that the start date be moved back to April 15th starting in 1964.
The 1965 season saw another change to when regular season baseball would start. This time, it was due to a league expansion from 10 teams to 12 teams. In order to accommodate this expansion, MLB decided to add an additional week to the beginning of the schedule so that each team would still play 162 games. The regular season now began on April 12th and ended on October 3rd.
The next significant change to when regular season baseball would start came as a result of another labor dispute between MLB and the MLBPA in 1972. After months of negotiations, both sides finally came to an agreement that resulted in a new collective bargaining agreement (CBA). Part of this CBA stipulated that spring training would start no earlier than February 15th and that the regular season would start no earlier than April 1st starting in 1974.
However, 1974 turned out to be a year with two major league baseball seasons . . . sort of . Due to a players’ strike that started on June 12th and lasted seven weeks, there ended up being two different seasons: one before the strike and one after it. As a result, teams only played between 108-116 games instead of their usual 162 games . Because of this shortened season caused by a strike, Major League Baseball pushed back its usualstart date for 1975 so that all teams could play 162 games again . Teams began training forthe 1975 season on February 20thand played their first game on April 7th—the lateststart date forregularseason baseball up until that point . #include

How does the start date of the season affect the length of the season?
The regular season of Major League Baseball (MLB) begins in late March and runs through early October, with each team playing 162 games. The start date of the season affects the length of the season; if the season were to start earlier, there would be more games played in cold weather conditions, which would put players at a greater risk for injury. Conversely, if the season were to start later, there would be more games played in warm weather conditions, which would be more conducive to offensive production. In either case, the length of the season would be affected.
What other factors affect the start date of the season?
There are a number of other factors that can affect the start date of the baseball season, including the length of spring training, the number of exhibition games played, and the number of days off scheduled during the season. In addition, the start date of the season can be affected by weather conditions and the availability of adequate playing facilities.
