We’re still waiting on the official announcement for the 2021 NBA MVP, but many experts are already speculating about who will take home the title. Some of the top contenders include LeBron James, Giannis Antetokounmpo, and Stephen Curry. Who do you think will be crowned MVP?
The 2021 NBA regular season is over
The 2021 NBA regular season has ended, and the MVP award is given out at the end of the season. However, the date for when the award will be announced has not yet been set.
The most likely time for when the announcement will be made is during the NBA Awards Show, which is scheduled to take place on July 22, 2021. This show will air on TNT at 9:00 PM ET.
It is also possible that the announcement could be made before or after this date, but it is unlikely that it would be announced any earlier than July 22.
The NBA playoffs will begin on May 22
The NBA playoffs will begin on May 22 and will conclude no later than July 22. The Finals will end no later than July 26, and the awards ceremony will be held on July 28. That leaves between two and four days for the media to deliberate and announce the winners of the Most Valuable Player, Defensive Player of the Year, Rookie of the Year, Sixth Man of the Year, Most Improved Player, and Coach of the Year awards.
The NBA Finals will begin on July 22
The NBA Finals will begin on July 22 and will continue until a champion is crowned, which will likely happen sometime in early August. After the conclusion of the Finals, the NBA will announce its individual award winners for the 2020-21 season. Most notably, of course, is the MVP award.
The frontrunners for this season’s MVP are Utah Jazz center Rudy Gobert and Los Angeles Clippers forward Kawhi Leonard. Gobert has been the best player on the best team in the league all season long, while Leonard has been spectacular for the Clippers, who have been one of the best teams in the league despite dealing with numerous injuries.
It’s worth noting that Leonard won MVP in both 2014 and 2016, while Gobert has never won the award. However, both players have a strong case this year and it will be interesting to see who takes home the hardware when all is said and done.
The NBA MVP will be announced on August 22
The National Basketball Association (NBA) Most Valuable Player Award is an annual National Basketball Association (NBA) award given since the 1955–56 season to the best performing player of the regular season. The winner receives the Maurice Podoloff Trophy, which is named in honor of the first commissioner (then president) of the NBA, who served from 1946 until 1963. Until 2011, the MVP was selected by a vote of NBA players. Since 2012, a panel of sportswriters and broadcasters from around the country has been entrusted with the task of voting for the recipient. Each member of the voting panel casts a vote for first to fifth place selections. Each first-place vote is worth 10 points; each second-place vote is worth seven; each third-place vote is worth five; each fourth-place vote is worth three; and each fifth-place vote is worth one. Starting from 2010, one ballot was cast by fans through online voting. The player with the highest point total wins the award. As of June 2021, 91 players have been honored as recipients of the award in its 65 seasons. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar has won six times, while Michael Jordan and LeBron James have won five times apiece. Bill Russell and Wilt Chamberlain have both won it four times, while Moses Malone won three times during his career as well as becoming only player to win back-to-back awards (1982 and 1983), an achievement matched only once since then by Tim Duncan (2001–02). Russell Westbrook became only player to average a triple-double over an entire season (30+ points, 10+ assists and 10+ rebounds per game) en route to winning in 2017, whereas he joined Oscar Robertson as just second player ever to average a triple double for an entire season multiple times when he did it again in 2019–20 and 2020–21 seasons respectively. Dirk Nowitzki has never averaged a triple double but won in 2007 becoming only European born player as recipient at that time.
