Introduction
The National Basketball Association (NBA) Most Valuable Player Award is an annual award given since the 1955–56 season to the best performing player of the regular season. The winner receives the Maurice Podoloff Trophy, which is named in honor of the first commissioner (then president) of the NBA, who served from 1946 until 1963. Until 1971, when a trophy was created to recognize the Award’s recipient, it was considered a predominantly honorary award. It has been given by the NBA players since its inception. To win the award, a player must be voted best by a plurality of his peers. Since its inception, only three rookies have won the award: Wilt Chamberlain in 1959–60, Wes Unseld in 1968–69, and Ralph Sampson in 1982–83.
In order to be eligible for the MVP award, players must meet certain criteria set by the NBA. Players must have played in at least 60 games during the regular season and cannot be on a team that did not make it to the playoffs. If a player meets these two requirements and is not voted MVP, they are automatically eligible for MVP consideration for future seasons.
