Which NFL Teams Need a Quarterback?
Contents
It’s no secret that NFL teams are always looking for the next big thing at quarterback. But which teams currently need to find a new quarterback?
The Teams
There are several NFL teams that could use an upgrade at the quarterback position. The Cleveland Browns, New York Jets, Buffalo Bills, and Arizona Cardinals all come to mind. Each of these teams has a quarterback that is either not good enough or is past his prime.
The New York Jets
The New York Jets are a professional American football team located in the New York metropolitan area. The Jets compete in the National Football League (NFL) as a member club of the league’s American Football Conference (AFC) East division. The team is headquartered in Florham Park, New Jersey. In a unique arrangement for the league, the Jets share MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey with the New York Giants. The franchise is legally and corporately registered as New York Jets, LLC.
The team was founded in 1959 as the Titans of New York, an original member of the American Football League (AFL); later, the franchise joined the NFL in the AFL–NFL merger in 1970. The team began to play in 1960 at the Polo Grounds. Under new ownership, the current name was adopted in 1963 and the franchise moved to Shea Stadium in 1964 and then to the Meadowlands Sports Complex in 1984. Since 1968, the Jets have appeared in Super Bowls IV, VI, VIII, XVIII, XXXI, and XLVIII, winning Super Bowl III over the Baltimore Colts and Super Bowl XLVIII over their intrastate rivals New York Giants. However, they have never returned to nor won a subsequent Super Bowl.
The Jacksonville Jaguars
The Jacksonville Jaguars have been in the NFL since 1995. They have had six different starting quarterbacks in that time. Mark Brunell was their first starting quarterback and he was with the team from 1995 to 2001. He was followed by David Garrard from 2002 to 2010, then by Blaine Gabbert from 2011 to 2013. Chad Henne started for the team from 2014 to 2016. Blake Bortles has been the team’s starting quarterback since 2016.
The Cleveland Browns
Cleveland Browns- The Browns are in a bit of predicament. They have the first and fourth overall picks in the draft. They could use both picks on quarterbacks and hope that one of them pans out. Or, they could use the first pick on a quarterback and use the fourth pick on another position that can help the team immediately, like running back or offensive line. If they do go with a quarterback at No. 1, then the likely candidates are USC’s Sam Darnold, Wyoming’s Josh Allen and UCLA’s Josh Rosen.
The Quarterbacks
In the NFL, a quarterback is often the most important player on a team. A good quarterback can make a big difference for a team, and a bad quarterback can hold a team back. teams that don’t have a good quarterback often find themselves looking for one. So, which NFL teams need a quarterback?
Dwayne Haskins
The Washington Redskins took Haskins with the 15th overall pick in the 2019 NFL draft. He played college football at Ohio State University. As a redshirt freshman in 2018, Haskins led Ohio State to a Big Ten championship and was named the Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year and the Rose Bowl MVP.
Kyler Murray
Kyler Murray was the first overall pick in the 2019 NFL draft, going to the Arizona Cardinals. He was a highly touted prospect and is expected to be the franchise quarterback for the Cardinals. Murray is a dual-threat quarterback, meaning he can both run and throw the ball. He is also very accurate, which is one of the most important qualities for a quarterback.
Drew Lock
Drew Lock was selected in the second round of the 2019 NFL Draft by the Denver Broncos. He played college football at Missouri.
The Conclusion
Now that we have looked at all the NFL teams and their respective quarterback situations, we can draw some conclusions about which teams are in dire need of a quarterback. The teams that stand out the most are the Buffalo Bills, Cleveland Browns, New York Jets, and Arizona Cardinals. These are all teams that either have a quarterback that is past his prime or on the downswing of his career, or they have a quarterback that has not shown enough potential to be their long-term starter.
