Which WWE Belt is More Important: The WWE Championship or the Universal Championship?

There are two top WWE belts that are vying for attention: the WWE Championship and the Universal Championship. But which one is more important?

Which WWE Belt is More Important: The WWE Championship or the Universal Championship?

WWE Championship

The WWE Championship is the most important belt in WWE. It is the belt that has been around the longest and is the most prestigious. The WWE Championship is also the belt that is most defended.

History

The WWE Championship is a world heavyweight championship created and promoted by the American professional wrestling promotion WWE on the SmackDown brand. It is one of two world titles for WWE’s main roster, alongside the WWE Universal Championship that was created for the Raw brand as a result of the 2016 WWE draft. The current champion is Drew McIntyre, who is in his first reign.

The title was first introduced in 1963 as the WWF World Heavyweight Championship and began to be referred to as the WWF Heavyweight Championship in 1979. In 1991, the promotion seceded from the National Wrestling Alliance (NWA), which recognized then-champion Bret Hart as its world champion; therefore, the title was once again renamed, this time to the WWF Championship. In 1993, Vincent K. McMahon, founder of Titan Sports (the then-parent company of the WWF), established you unable to win or lose if you’re not pinned or made to submit respectively”), as well as how there can be more than one champion at a time depending on whether champions are defending their titles on different brands.

In 2002 after WrestleMania X8, a brand extension took place and an additional world title known as the World Heavyweight Championship was created for SmackDown! while Raw kept The Undisputed Championship (renamed from The World Championship). As a result of this brand extension and The Brand Extension Draft Lottery that took place that year, champions could appear and defend their titles on any brand. From 2005 until its 2013 unification with The Undisputed Championship (the latter being retired), it appeared exclusively on SmackDown!.

The title was unified in 2009 with then-World Heavyweight Champion John Cena defeating then-WWE Champion Rey Mysterio at WWE Survivor Series after Mysterio won an interpromotional match earlier that evening making it one 1 + 1 = 1 situation whereby if Mysterio had lost, he would have had to relinquish his title due to Extreme Rules stipulation being placed on it beforehand by Vince McMahon. From here onwards though it has been defended both brands up until 2016 where Brock Lesnar defeated Randy Orton and became exclusive to Raw following WWE’s reintroduction of brand-exclusive pay-per-views later that year (a concept abandoned shortly afterwards).

At Elimination Chamber 2020 Roman Reigns defeated Braun Strowman and Goldberg in a no disqualification triple threat match to win what was then known as “The Universal Title” vacating “The WWE Title” simultaneously as part of storyline. After being vacant for almost four months due to COVID-19 related restrictions which preventedphysical tapings taking place for a while it was announced that “The WWE Title” would be brought back with a six man tournament taking place over two nights with AJ Styles winning it becoming a two time champion.

Importance

In professional wrestling, a championship is a coveted prize that a wrestler strives to win. The WWE Championship and the Universal Championship are two of the most prestigious titles in WWE. But which one is more important?

The WWE Championship is considered the top prize in WWE. It has been held by some of the biggest names in wrestling, such as Hulk Hogan, The Rock, and John Cena. The Universal Championship is newer, having only been introduced in 2016. It is considered WWE’s second-most important title.

So which championship is more important? That depends on who you ask. Some fans believe that the WWE Championship is more prestigious, while others believe that the Universal Championship is more important because it represents the top prize in WWE’s Raw brand. Ultimately, it’s up to each individual fan to decide which title they think is more important.

Universal Championship

The Universal Championship is the top title in WWE and is more important than the WWE Championship. The Universal Championship is reserved for Raw wrestlers while the WWE Championship is for SmackDown wrestlers. The Universal Championship was created in 2016 and has been defended at every WWE pay-per-view since its creation.

History

The WWE Universal Championship is a world heavyweight championship created and promoted by the American professional wrestling promotion WWE on the SmackDown brand. It is one of two world titles for WWE’s main roster, alongside the WWE Championship on the Raw brand. The current champion is Brock Lesnar, who is in his second reign.

The title was established as the WWE World Heavyweight Championship on Raw on July 25, 2016, replacing the original WWE World Heavyweight Championship that was retired at WrestleMania 32 earlier that year. The new title was Unified with SmackDown’s original World Heavyweight Championship as a result of The Brand Extension; this makes it subject to changes in lineage due to changes in eligibility due to brand-exclusive events such as draft lotteries and Supershows.

The Universal Championship belt consists of a metal plated replica of Sputnik 1 satellite with a red leather strap.

The WWE Championship has been held by some of the biggest names in wrestling, such as Hulk Hogan, The Rock, and John Cena. The Universal Championship has also been held by some big names, such as Brock Lesnar and Goldberg.

The WWE Championship is also the title that is defended at WWE’s flagship event, WrestleMania.
