Bryant was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He played high school basketball at Lower Merion High School in Pennsylvania, where he was recognized as the top high school basketball player in the country. He declared for the NBA draft upon graduation, and was selected by the Charlotte Hornets with the 13th overall pick in the 1996 NBA draft. The Hornets traded him to the Lakers. As a rookie, Bryant earned himself a reputation as a high-flyer and a fan favorite by winning the 1997 Slam Dunk Contest. Despite a feud with Shaquille O’Neal, they led the Lakers to three consecutive NBA championships from 2000 to 2002.
In 2003, Bryant was accused of sexual assault by a 19-year-old hotel employee in Colorado; he denied the accusation but premised to settled the case out of court for $2.6 million . The sexual assault charges were dropped when prosecutors said they could not overcome his accuser’s credibility issues , but a separate civil suit was filed which was later settled out of court . After Shaq was traded to Miami following acrimonious disputes with Kobe in 2004 , Kobe led the Lakers to two more championships in 2009 and 2010 without O’Neal , as well as becoming league MVP in 2008 .
