The Top Rebounders
In the National Basketball Association, a rebound is the act of successfully gaining possession of the ball after a missed field goal or free throw. A player who retrieves the ball after a missed shot is said to have “rebounded”. Rebounds are given to a player who tips in a missed shot on his own team’s offensive end of the court, or who gathers the ball after it comes off the backboard following a teammates’ miss or block.
The number of rebounds a player averages per game (RPG) is an important statistic in basketball. It is also considered one of the most telling indicators of a player’s “motor” and hustle, as well as their length and athleticism. Players who average 6 or more rebounds per game in their careers are referred to as “rebounding specialists”.
Andres Strickland currently leads all players in rebounds per game, averaging 13.7. Strickland is closely followed by Deandre Ayton, averaging 13.5 RPG, and Hassan Whiteside with 12.3 RPG.
The Top Assists
Assists are one of the nine statistical categories that basketball players can accumulate during a game, and they have been an official NBA stat since the 1963-64 season. Assists are awarded to the player who passes the ball to the teammate who scores a basket. That player would not receive an assist if his pass was made with the intention of setting up a score, but the resulting basket was not made. Also, if another player intercepts or takes away a pass that was meant for a scoring teammate, then no assist is awarded.
