WWE Title Holders

WWE has changed a lot over the years, but one thing has remained the same: the importance of the WWE title. The WWE title is the most prestigious title in the company and has been held by some of the biggest names in the business. Who are the most decorated WWE superstars? Let’s take a look.

WWE Champion

The WWE Championship is a world heavyweight championship created and promoted by the American professional wrestling promotion WWE, currently defended on their Raw brand. It is one of the two world titles in WWE, alongside the Universal Championship that was created for their SmackDown brand as a result of the 2016 WWE draft. The current champion is Drew McIntyre, who is in his first reign.

The title was introduced in 1963 by the then-worldwide leader in professional wrestling, the Capitol Wrestling Corporation (CWC), as the World Wide Wrestling Federation (WWWF) World Heavyweight Championship. The inaugural champion was Buddy Rogers. Since its inception, the title has undergone many name changes due to company name changes and title unifications. In 1971, the CWC was renamed World Wrestling Federation (WWF). Upon WWF’s second brand extension split in 2002, it became exclusive to SmackDown! and Raw—the main event programs of WWF’s successor promotion—and ceased to be promoted on other programming and pre-taped pay-per-view events; however it remained active within WWE’s development territories until 2018 before being withdrawn from all remaining territories outside North America upon WWE rebranding NXT UK as a separate entity from NXT. It then became exclusive to Raw once more as a result of the 2019 WWE draft but switched brands again to SmackDown after Brock Lesnar defeated Kofi Kingston at Crown Jewel.

In 2009, WWE released a DVD set called History of the World Heavyweight Championship, which chronicles certain key moments in the title’s history. The following year, WWE established two additional world titles: the WWE Tag Team Championship on SmackDown! and Classic Championship on ECW (which lasted until 2010). In 2010 at WrestleMania XXVI, ECW was closed; thus making third brand title vacant for over nine years before being revived exclusively on NXT UK on January 12th, 2019. In 2016 the brand extension returned with a draft; As a result, two world titles were once again active: The Universal Championship exclusively for Raw and for SmackDown—the WWE Championship—making three world championships promoted by WWE overall since 2002.

World Heavyweight Champion

The World Heavyweight Championship was a professional wrestling world heavyweight championship in WWE. It was established by the then-World Wrestling Federation (WWF) in 1963 as the WWWF World Heavyweight Championship, and later became promoted as the WWE World Heavyweight Championship in 2002 after the WWF’s name change to WWE. The final holder was Rey Mysterio, who defeated Kurt Angle to win the title on October 7, 2019 at WWE Crown Jewel.

In 1963, the first World Heavyweight Champion was crowned in the then-World Wrestling Federation (WWF): “Nature Boy” Buddy Rogers. When the WWF split from the National Wrestling Alliance (NWA) in August 1963 over its refusal to recognize Gorilla Monsoon as a legitimate challenger to Rogers’ title, it created its own version of the world title. In 1971, it became known as the “WWF World Heavyweight Championship”, and in 2002 became known as simply “the WWE World Heavyweight Championship”.

Over the course of its history, through multiple heavyweight champions and changes in company ownership and brand extension, it has remained one of WWE’s most prestigious titles. Since Donald Trump became President of the United States following his election victory on November 8, 2016, he has made numerous references to himself as “champion” of various causes; this eventually led to WWE owner Vince McMahon declaring Trump to be an honorary champion of their flagship program SmackDown at Madison Square Garden on July 23, 2017 during his big return after being absent for almost a year.

WWE Universal Champion

The WWE Universal Championship is a world heavyweight championship created and promoted by the American professional wrestling promotion WWE on the SmackDown brand. It is one of two world titles for the SmackDown brand, alongside the WWE Championship on Raw. Theuniversal championship was established as WWE’s fifth world championship, exclusively forthe SmackDown brand, in 2016 following WWE’s draft. The inaugural Universal Champion was Goldberg, who defeated Brock Lesnar at that year’s Survivor Series event to become champion.

The title is one of WWE’s two top championships, alongside the WWE World Heavyweight Championship on Raw, with both being regarded as the promotion’s flagship titles. The Universal Champion has appeared and defended the title at all twelve ofSmackDown’s pay-per-view events through 2019.

As of 2020, Roman Reigns is in his second reign as the Universal Champion, having won the title at WrestleMania 36 in April 2020. He defeated Goldberg for it at that event, making him a two-time champion overall. Brock Lesnar has had three separate reigns with a combined total of 1,496 days —the longest single reign being 845 days from November 2017 to August 2019— while Goldberg has also had three separate runs as champion for a combined total of 156 days —the longest single reign being 71 days from November 2016 toJanuary 2017— making him tied with Lesnar as both men have had the mostreigns with three each.
