It is one of two world titles for WWE’s main roster, alongside the WWE Universal Championship that was created for the Raw brand as a result of the 2016 draft. The current holder is AJ Styles, who is in his second reign.

The inaugural champion was Brock Lesnar, who won the title at SummerSlam in 2002. The title’s lineage is traced back to the first world heavyweight championship, which was sanctioned by the National Wrestling Alliance (NWA) and defended in its member promotions. The NWA title was abandonned after Vince McMahon’s World Bodybuilding Federation seceded from the NWA and became Extreme Championship Wrestling (ECW). The ECW World Heavyweight Championship then became WCW’s top title until WCW was purchased by McMahon in 2001. McMahon reactivated both titles, making them exclusive to WWE’s two main television programs: Raw and SmackDown. The following year, then-SmackDown General Manager Stephanie McMahon introduced a redesigned world heavyweight championship for her brand that was referred to as “the big gold belt”.

In late 2013, straps were added to both titles, similar to those used on the original world heavyweight championship. Over the course of 2015 and 2016, then-WWE World Heavyweight Champion Seth Rollins had various strap designs on his title belt due to him defending it on both Raw and SmackDown. These designs were eventually carried over to both world titles when Rollins lost the title at WrestleMania 32 to Roman Reigns, with each world championship then having its own distinct strap design.
