The Teams

Today, there are ten games in the NBA. The Brooklyn Nets are playing the Philadelphia Sixers, the Utah Jazz are playing the Houston Rockets, the Toronto Raptors are playing the Milwaukee Bucks, the Oklahoma City Thunder are playing the New Orleans Pelicans, the Boston Celtics are playing the Minnesota Timberwolves, the Dallas Mavericks are playing the Memphis Grizzlies, the Sacramento Kings are playing the New York Knicks, the Portland Trail Blazers are playing the Phoenix Suns, and the Cleveland Cavaliers are playing the Golden State Warriors.

Los Angeles Lakers

The Los Angeles Lakers are an American professional basketball team based in Los Angeles. The Lakers compete in the National Basketball Association (NBA), as a member of the league’s Western Conference Pacific Division. The Lakers play their home games at Staples Center, an arena shared with the NBA’s Los Angeles Clippers, the Los Angeles Sparks of the Women’s National Basketball Association, and the Los Angeles Kings of the National Hockey League. The Lakers are one of the most successful teams in the history of the NBA, having won 16 NBA championships, their last being in 2010.

Boston Celtics

The Boston Celtics are an American professional basketball team based in Boston, Massachusetts. They are part of the Atlantic Division of the Eastern Conference in the National Basketball Association (NBA), and play their home games at TD Garden, which they share with the National Hockey League (NHL)’s Boston Bruins. Founded in 1946 as one of the league’s original eight teams, properties of Benjamin Franklin TV Cable Co., the franchise is owned by Wycliffe Grousbeck and coached by Brad Stevens. The Celtics’ storied history includes 18 NBA championships-the most in NBA history-8 conference titles, and 13 division championships. 41 Hall of Famers have played for the Celtics, more than any other NBA franchise. Notable players who have donned a Celtic uniform include Bill Russell, Bob Cousy, Larry Bird, Kevin McHale, Paul Pierce, Rajon Rondo among others.The Celtics trace their roots to June 6th 1946 when Walter Brown was awarded a charter franchise in Basketball Association of America (BAA), became one of original eight teams scheduled to begin play that coming November.[1][2] In 1950 Brown purchased shares of Garden Corporation stock from majority owner Lawrence Humphreys and became its largest shareholder with controlling interest.[3]

The Celtics won their first championship in 1957 under coach Red Auerbach and center Bill Russell.[4] Russell would lead the team to eleven more championships during his thirteen-year career as well as winning MVP five times and Finals MVP six times.[5][6] With seventeen championships overall,[7] Auerbach is also recognized as one of basketball’s greatest coaches while Russell is considered one of its greatest players–particularly defensive players–of all time.[8][9][10] The following decades saw mixed success for the Celtics as they traded away several star players such as Dave Cowens and John Havlicek.[11] In 1977–78 Head Coach Tom Heinsohn guided them to an impressive comeback from a 26–46 record during his first year at the helm following the retirement of longtime head coach Auerbach; Heinsohn would lead them to five more conference titles over his next ten seasons before he was replaced by former player K. C. Jones who then led them to two more titles over a four-year period before he was replaced by Chris Ford who led them to another title in 1986. Afterward Ford was replaced by Rick Pitino who oversaw construction revolving around young talent culminating in another championship under young star Paul Pierce along with improving upon their regular season record which resulted in ten consecutive playoff berths including seven 50+ win seasons under Pitino but ultimately fell short during his tenure only making it past the Eastern Conference Finals once resulting in his firing after six seasons withassinment §18 million buyout Revived once again following Pitino’s firing hiring Doc Rivers who would then lead them back to prominence acquiring future Hall-of-Famer Kevin Garnett along with Ray Allen forming what many considered one of best starting lineups ever surrounding Pierce which helped lead them back to prominence culminating an NBA Championship defeating archrival Los Angeles Lakers 4–2 on June 17th 2008 snapping a 20 year drought since their last championship win back in 1986 cementing themselves as one among most storied franchises basketball history.

Miami Heat

The Miami Heat are an American professional basketball team based in Miami, Florida. The Heat compete in the National Basketball Association (NBA) as a member of the league’s Eastern Conference Southeast Division. The Heat play their home games at American Airlines Arena, and have won three NBA championships.

The Players

LeBron James

LeBron James is an American professional basketball player for the Los Angeles Lakers of the National Basketball Association (NBA). He is widely considered to be one of the greatest basketball players of all time. James has won four NBA Most Valuable Player (MVP) Awards, four NBA Finals MVP Awards, and two Olympic gold medals. He has also been selected to thirteen NBA All-Star teams, twelve All-NBA teams, and six All-Defensive teams.

Kyrie Irving

Kyrie Andrew Irving is an American professional basketball player for the Brooklyn Nets of the National Basketball Association (NBA). He was drafted by the Cleveland Cavaliers with the first overall pick in the 2011 NBA draft. A six-time NBA All-Star, Irving was named the NBA Rookie of the Year after his first season and has since been a five-time All-NBA Team member. He won an NBA championship with the Cavaliers in 2016.

Born and raised in Melbourne, Australia, Irving grew up playing basketball for Montverde Academy in Florida. He played college basketball for Duke University before being selected by Cleveland with the first overall pick in 2011. In his six seasons with the Cavaliers, Irving made three All-Star teams and was named All-NBA three times. He played a major role in helping the Cavaliers win an NBA championship in 2016, their first ever, scoring a season-high 30 points in Game 4 of the Finals an providing the game-winning shot in Game 7.

He was traded to Boston following the 2016 season. In his two seasons with the Celtics, Irving made two more All-Star teams and was named second-team All-NBA twice before suffering a season-ending injury prior to the playoffs in 2019. He requested a trade from Boston prior to free agency that offseason and he was subsequently traded to Brooklyn.

An accomplished scorer, Irving averages 21.2 points per game for his career while shooting 47 percent from the field and 39 percent on three-point shots, which ranks 15th all time among players who have made at least 1,000 three pointers. He has also shown himself to be an capable passer; he averaged 5.7 assists per game during his career thus far while committing just 2.6 turnovers per game.

Jimmy Butler

Jimmy Butler IV (born September 14, 1989) is an American professional basketball player for the Philadelphia 76ers of the National Basketball Association (NBA). He played college basketball for Tyler Junior College and Marquette University, and was drafted with the 30th overall pick in the 2011 NBA draft by the Chicago Bulls. Butler has been selected to four NBA All-Star teams and has been named to both the All-NBA Team and the NBA All-Defensive Team.

In his first season with the Sixers, Butler averaged 18.2 points, 5.3 rebounds, 4.0 assists and 1.9 steals per game, shooting 46.9 percent from the field and 34.7 percent from three-point range. He was subsequently named to his fourth consecutive All-Star team.

Frank Vogel

Frank Vogel is an American professional basketball coach who is the head coach for the Los Angeles Lakers of the National Basketball Association (NBA). He has also served as the head coach for the Indiana Pacers and Orlando Magic. He led the Pacers to five consecutive Central Division championships and to the playoffs in each of his first five seasons as head coach from 2010 to 2015.

Brad Stevens

Brad Stevens is an American professional basketball coach who is currently the head coach of the Boston Celtics of the National Basketball Association (NBA). He is a two-time NBA Coach of the Year, winning the award in 2016 and 2020. Stevens led the Butler Bulldogs to back-to-back NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Championship games in 2010 and 2011.
