The NFL is one of the four major professional sports leagues in North America, and the highest professional level of American football in the world. The NFL’s 17-week regular season runs from early September to late December, with each team playing 16 games and having one bye week. Following the conclusion of the regular season, six teams from each conference (four division winners and two wild card teams) advance to the playoffs, a single-elimination tournament culminating in the Super Bowl, which is usually held on the first Sunday in February and is played between the champions of the NFC and AFC.
The NFL was formed in 1920 as the American Professional Football Association (APFA) before renaming itself the National Football League for the 1922 season. The NFL agreed to merge with the American Football League (AFL) in 1966, creating the Super Bowl, which has become the most watched television event in North America. The league currently consists of thirty-two teams from across America: twenty-four from cities with at least 800,000 people, four from cities between 500,000 and 800,000 people, and four from cities under 500,000 people. For example: The New York Jets and New York Giants both represent cities with over 8 million people; while Jacksonville, Carolina Panthers, Detroit Lions all have populations under 2 million.
The game
The game is played between two teams of 11 players each. The offense, which is the team with the ball, tries to advance the ball down the field by either running with the ball or passing it to a teammate. The defense, which is the team without the ball, tries to stop the offense from advancing the ball and to score points of their own.
The outcome
The outcome of the game will be decided by a number of factors, such as the weather, the teams’ form, and the players’ fitness. However, the most important factor will be the referee’s decisions.
