Introduction
In 1892, there were 14 professional football teams. These teams were located in large cities on the East Coast, such as Pittsburgh, New York, and Philadelphia. These teams were not affiliated with each other and did not play each other on a regular basis. Because of this, there was no official NFL team until 1920. The first NFL team was the Dayton Triangles, who were founded in 1913.
The Early Years of the NFL
The National Football League (NFL) was founded in 1920, when eleven teams from four states (Illinois, Michigan, New York, and Pennsylvania) banded together to form the American Professional Football Association (APFA). The first NFL team was the Dayton Triangles, who were founded in 1913.
The Birth of the NFL
The National Football League (NFL) was founded in 1920, just two years after the birth of its predecessor organization, the American Professional Football Association (APFA). But for all intents and purposes, the NFL did not exist until 1922, when it absorbed four teams from the APFA. That league—more commonly known today as the American Football League (AFL)—had been formed in 1920 with ten charter members: the Akron Pros, Canton Bulldogs, Cleveland Indians, Dayton Triangles, Decatur Staleys, Hammond Pros, Muncie Flyers, Rochester Jeffersons, Rock Island Independents, and Syracuse Stars.
The following year saw the addition of three more teams: the Buffalo All-Americans, Chicago Cardinals (today’s Arizona Cardinals), and Detroit Heralds. The latter squad changed its name to the Panther before the season began but quickly reverted back to the Heralds after Strupp’s team went 0-2. At best a mediocre squad—the hallmark of many of these early pro teams—the Heralds managed to win only one game in 1921 and then promptly folded. Though it would be another 44 years before an NFL team would once again call Detroit home (with the founding of the Lions in 1934), this would not be the last time a team bearing that city’s name would appear in professional football.
The First NFL Teams
The National Football League was founded in 1920, but it was not until 1932 that the first NFL draft was held. The NFL draft is an annual event in which NFL teams select eligible college football players. The first NFL team was the Chicago Bears, who were founded in 1919. The Bears were followed by the Green Bay Packers (1921), the New York Giants (1925), and the Portsmouth Spartans (1930).
The First NFL Team
The National Football League (NFL) is a professional American football league. It was formed by eleven teams in 1920 as the American Professional Football Association (APFA), with the league changing its name to the National Football League in 1922. The first ever NFL game took place on October 3, 1920 between the Buffalo All-Americans and the Canton Bulldogs.
The Green Bay Packers
The Green Bay Packers are a professional American football team based in Green Bay, Wisconsin. The Packers compete in the National Football League (NFL) as a member club of the league’s National Football Conference (NFC) North division. It is the third-oldest franchise in the NFL, dating back to 1919, and is the only non-profit, community-owned major league professional sports team based in the United States. Home games have been played at Lambeau Field since 1957.
The Packers are the last of the “small town teams” which were common in the NFL during the league’s early days of 1920–1949. Founded as a semi-professional team by Earl “Curly” Lambeau and George Whitney Calhoun with money from Lambeau’s employer, the Indian Packing Company, the Packers organization has been run by a single family since its inception. between 1919 and 1920, after a series of setbacks brought about by World War I, Lambeau found financial backers from Lombardi Avenue bar owner Andrew Hess and former Green Bay mayor John Daniel Eagan who helped him purchase land on Maple Street (now Ashland Avenue). The team played its first games on city parks and then made Lambeau Field their permanent home in 1925 after purchasing it for $103,000; by 1927 revenue had grown to nearly $200,000 per year and over 200 high school teams had scheduled games there.
The Chicago Bears
The Chicago Bears were originally founded in 1919 as the Decatur Staleys. The team was renamed the Chicago Bears in 1922. The Bears are one of the oldest NFL franchises and have won nine NFL Championships, including one Super Bowl Championship.
Conclusion
The Green Bay Packers were the first NFL team.
