The Chicago Cubs
The Chicago Cubs, led by manager Joe Maddon, won the 2016 World Series, defeating the Cleveland Indians in seven games. It was the first World Series title for the Cubs in 108 years, and ended the longest championship drought in North American professional sports history. Maddon was named the World Series Most Valuable Player. The Cubs won 103 regular-season games, more than any other team in baseball. They then went on to defeat the San Francisco Giants in the National League Division Series and the Los Angeles Dodgers in the National League Championship Series, before ultimately becoming world champions.
The Cleveland Indians
The Cleveland Indians returned to the World Series this year after a long drought and faced off against the red-hot Chicago Cubs. The Cubs had not won a World Series since 1908, while the Indians’ last title came in 1948. In the end, it was the Indians who came out on top, winning the series in seven games.
The Los Angeles Dodgers
In 2016, the Los Angeles Dodgers won the National League pennant and advanced to the World Series. They faced off against the American League champions, the Cleveland Indians. The Indians won Game 1, but the Dodgers won Game 2. The series was then tied at 1-1.
The San Francisco Giants
On October 29, 2016, the San Francisco Giants beat the Cleveland Indians in game 7 of the World Series, winning their fourth championship in the last ten years. After falling behind early in the game, the Giants mounted a comeback to take the lead in the bottom of the ninth inning. The game was won on a walk-off home run by third baseman Pablo Sandoval, who was named the World Series MVP.
The Washington Nationals
The Washington Nationals won the 2016 Baseball World Series. This was the first time that the Nationals had won the World Series, and the first time that a team from Washington, D.C. had won the World Series since the Washington Senators won in 1924. The Nationals were led by pitcher Stephen Strasburg, who was named the World Series MVP.
