The Spurs were making their second appearance in the Finals in three seasons, having defeated the Nets in six games of the 1999 NBA Finals. The Nets were making their first ever appearance in the NBA Finals, despite having existed as a franchise since 1967; this was possible because they only joined the NBA in 1976 as part of a merger with the rival American Basketball Association (ABA).
The 2003 Finals began on June 5 and ended on June 15. This was also Ray Allen’s first ever trip to the NBA Finals. San Antonio’s Tim Duncan was named as the Most Valuable Player for playing an integral role in victories in Games 3 and 4 during which he displayed his trademark determination regarding lopsided scores.
