The Nationals are the eighth major league franchise to be based in Washington, and the first since 1971. The current franchise was founded in 1969 as the Montreal Expos, part of the MLB expansion. The Expos were purchased by Major League Baseball before the 2002 season after being sold by their original owner, Jeffrey Loria.

The franchise officially moved to Washington, D.C., for the 2005 season, and play at Nationals Park ever since 2008 season. While including players like Bryce Harper, Ryan Zimmerman and Max Scherzer helped the team make five postseason appearances— all between 2012 and 2017 — they have yet to win a postseason series or make it to a World Series.

The Washington Nationals are a professional baseball team based in Washington, D.C. The Nationals compete in Major League Baseball (MLB) as a member club of the National League (NL) East division. From 2005 to 2007, the team played their home games at RFK Stadium, before moving to Nationals Park in 2008. They are based in the nation’s capital city since 1871. The Nationals are owned by Mark Lerner and managed by Davey Martinez.

The team began play as the Montreal Expos in 1969. They were created as part of MLB’s expansion into Canada. Along with the Seattle Pilots, one of their fellow expansion franchises, the club was placed in the newly created American League East Division. They became part of the new league along with the San Diego Padres and the Seattle Pilots’ relocation franchise, which became the Milwaukee Brewers.[6] The Expo label was short-lived; by the late 1970s they had changed their name to simply “Montreal”. They played at Jarry Park Stadium until 1977, when they relocated to Olympic Stadium.[7]

The franchise struggled over its first decade of play; beginning their existence as one of only two Canadian teams in MLBunder former owner Charles Bronfman, through drugs scandals involving players Tim Raines and Vladimir Guerrero while under majority owner Jeffrey Loria after 2002.[8][9][10] They qualified for post-season play only once during this time, defeating the Philadelphia Phillies en route to a National League East divisional championship victory during baseball’s 1981 strike-shortened season—their only winning campaign during this period.[11]

After baseball returned from the 1981 strike perhaps Montréal’s biggest moments came in 1982 and 1994 when they hosted Major League Baseball’s All-Star Game at Olympic Stadium each year; both times playing host to more than 60,000 fans per game.[12] However despite holding a competitive advantage over most other NL teams in ticket prices and attendance due largely because of low operating costs relative to US teams,[13][14] combined with poor performances on field,[15] ownership changes,[16] constant rumors about relocating south of the border if a new ballpark could not be obtained,[17][18][19][20] little investment from prior ownership led many American fans and pundits alike to derisively label them “the Expos”.[21][22][23])

Results

The Washington Nationals won the baseball game against the Houston Astros. This was a close game with the final score being 5 to 4. It was a great game to watch and both teams played well.

Game One

The Nationals won the first game of the series against the Dodgers by a score of 6-0.

Game Two

The Nationals put up a valiant effort, but ultimately fell to the Dodgers in game two of the National League Division Series. The game was tightly contested throughout, with neither team able to gain a significant advantage. The Dodgers took an early lead in the first inning, but the Nationals quickly rallied to tie the game in the bottom of the inning. The score remained tied until the ninth inning, when the Dodgers finally broke through with a run to take the lead. The Nationals were unable to muster a response in the bottom of the inning, and thus their season came to an end.

Game Three

The Nationals are headed to the World Series for the first time in franchise history after defeating the Cardinals 7-4 in Game Four of the NLCS. It was a back-and-forth game that saw the lead change hands several times, but ultimately it was the Nationals who emerged victorious thanks to a two-run homer by Howie Kendrick in the seventh inning.

This is a huge moment for the Nationals, who have now won three straight postseason series and are just four wins away from a World Series championship. It’s been a long journey for this franchise, and they’re finally starting to see some success.

Game Four was a nail-biter from start to finish, and it was fitting that it ended with Kendrick’s home run. He’s been one of the best players on this team all year long, and he came up big when it mattered most. The Nationals are going to need him to continue to be a force if they want to win it all.

The Cardinals put up a good fight, but ultimately they came up short. They’ve had an incredible season and they should be proud of what they accomplished. However, it’s now time for the Nationals to take center stage and try to win their first World Series title.
