Vanderbilt Baseball Defeats Ole Miss

Vanderbilt Baseball won their SEC home opener against Ole Miss on Friday night. It was a great game and an even better victory.

The win came in large part due to the great performance by pitcher Kumar Rocker, who pitched a complete game and only gave up four runs. Vanderbilt University is a private research university in Nashville, Tennessee. Founded in 1873, it was named in honor of shipping and rail magnate “Commodore” Cornelius Vanderbilt, who provided the school its initial $1 million endowment despite having never been to the South. Vanderbilt hoped that his gift and the greater work of the university would help to heal the details of the Civil War.

The Commodore left the school $1 million (equal to about $140 million today) in cash and U.S. government bonds. The university paid out steadily over the next forty years, finally ending their dependence on outside contributions completely by 1916.
