Leading the charge is senior outfielder Jordan Rueff, who is coming off a monster junior season in which he hit .351 with 10 home runs and 36 RBI. Rueff has been a key piece of the puzzle for the Leathernecks since he arrived on campus, and he will be looking to finish his collegiate career on a high note.
Another player to keep an eye on is sophomore first baseman Connor Kopach. Kopach had a terrific rookie campaign, hitting .333 with six home runs and 35 RBI. He has continued to develop his power stroke this offseason and should be one of the top power hitters in the conference this season.
The Leathernecks also have a promising young player in freshman third baseman Drew Knock. Knock was a highly-touted recruit out of High School and has already shown glimpses of his potential during fall scrimmages. The WIU Leathernecks have a solid team of returners and newcomers that promise an exciting season ahead. One key asset to this year’s team are the fielders, who are sure to make some great plays this season.
The Leathernecks have five experienced seniors in the outfield this season. Isaac Smith, Tanner Lubach, Jack Larkin Jr., Nick Pauley, and Kyle Ruchim have all played in at least 40 games during their time at WIU. They’ve combined for almost 400 hits and 250 RBIs throughout their careers. Each of these players has made significant contributions to the team in the past, and they’re only getting better with time.
Wiu also has a strong group of infielders that will be anchoring the defense this season. Senior first baseman Zachary siatta has been with the team for four years and is coming off a year where he hit .325 with 10 home runs and 50 RBIs. Joining him is junior second baseman Joe Retzer, who hit .288 last year with two homers and 30 RBIs. Shortstop Jeremyendoza Morin brings speed to the infield; he had 13 stolen bases last season. At third base is junior Nick Huffman, who rounds out the infield with his strong glove and good bat; he hit .273 last year with four homers and 30 RBIs.
