In the New York Times article of March 12, 1957, Woodside Baseball was referred to as a “summer baseball institution”. The article detailed how the teams were started in the late 1890s by two Woodside men, J.J. Kelly and Fred Hennessy. The teams played in an empty lot on Roosevelt Avenue between 57th and 58th Streets. In time, the teams moved to Windmill Point Park also known as “The Polo Grounds of Queens”, where they played for over 50 years.

The Brooklyn Daily Eagle ran an article on August 12,1924 about the Woodside Baseball Club’s victory over the Astorianine 5-2. The game was played at Windmill Point Park The winning pitcher was Johnny Murphy who would go on to play for the New York Yankees and be inducted into the Major League Baseball Hall of Fame in 1947.

On July 19, 1931, the New York Times ran an article about a game between two Woodside teams, the Kellys and The Tammany Hounds. The Kellys won 7-1 with Lefty Grove pitching a complete game. Grove would also be inducted into the major league baseball Hall of Fame in 1947.
