The WPIAL baseball playoffs are here!
The WPIAL Baseball Playoffs are here, and with that comes excitement and anticipation from baseball fans all around the district. All 16 teams have worked hard all season long and have earned their spot in the playoffs.Now, it’s time to see who will come out on top and be crowned the WPIAL champion.
What you need to know about the playoffs
The WPIAL baseball playoffs are upon us! Here’s what you need to know:
The playoffs will begin on May 20th and will run through June 3rd.
All games will be played at PNC Park, home of the Pittsburgh Pirates
Tickets for all games will be available for purchase at the PNC Park ticket office or online at www.wpiALbaseball.com.
Prices for tickets are as follows: $8 for adults, $6 for seniors (62 and over), $3 for students (with valid ID), and children under 12 are free.

The top seeds in the playoffs
The WPIAL Baseball Playoffs are here and the top seeds in each classification have been announced. In Class AAAA, the top seed is North Allegheny who finished the regular season with a record of 19-1. They will take on the16th seed, Mt. Lebanon, who finished 8-12. In Class AAA the top seed is West Allegheny who finished 18-2. They will take on the15th seed, Laurel Highlands who finished 7-13.
In Class AA, the top seed is Beaver Falls who finished 16-4. They will take on the 14th seed, Apollo-Ridge, who finished 9-11. In Class A, the top seed is California Area, who finished 15-3. They will take on the 13th seed Carmichaels Area, who finished 10-10 on the season.
The schedule for the playoffs
The WPIAL baseball playoffs are kicking off today! Here is the schedule for the first round of the playoffs:
Monday, May 13th
10:00AM – #16 New Castle vs. #17 Belle Vernon
12:30PM – #9 Hempfield Area vs. #24 Gateway
3:00PM – #20 rivals Highlands and Ringgold face off
5:30PM – #13 Mars takes on #4 Seneca Valley
How the playoffs work
The WPIAL baseball playoffs are a single elimination tournament. The top 4 seeds receive a first-round bye. The 5-12 seeds play each other in the first round, with the winners advancing to play the 1-4 seeds in the quarterfinals. The quarterfinals and semifinals are best two-out-of-three series, while the finals are a best-three-out-of-five series.

The history of the WPIAL baseball playoffs
The WPIAL baseball playoffs are a single-elimination tournament held each year to determine the champions of each of the League’s five classifications. The tournament has been held annually since 1934, making it one of the oldest high school baseball tournaments in the country.
Class A
The first WPIAL Class A Baseball Playoffs were held in 1934. In the early years of the tournament, only four teams qualified for the playoffs. The number of teams increased to eight in 1976, nine in 1985, and ten in 1992. Since 2001, 16 teams have qualified for the Class A playoffs.
Class AA
The first WPIAL Class AA Baseball Playoffs were held in 1949. In the early years of the tournament, only four teams qualified for the playoffs. The number of teams increased to eight in 1984, nine in 1988, and ten in 1996. Since 2001, 16 teams have qualified for the Class AA playoffs.
Class AAAA
The first WPIAL Class AAA baseball playoffs were held in 1971. In the early years of the tournament, only four teams qualified for the playoffs. The number of teams increased to eight in 1987 and sixteen in 1993. Since 2001, 24 teams have qualified for the Class AAAA playoffs.
Class AAAA was divided into two divisions (East and West) in 2006. In 2008, the two divisions were combined back into one division.
The current format for the WPIAL baseball playoffs consists of four rounds:
Round 1 – All classification-level losers from Qualifying Round 1 enter a 8-team bracket (all losers from Regions 1 & 4; all losers from Regions 2 & 3).
Round 2 – Losers from Round 1 play each other at higher-seeded sites until there are 4 remaining; top 2 seeds host
Round 3 – Losers from Qualifying Round 2 enter a 4-team bracket (2 games at neutral sites)
Championship game – Winner from Round 3 vs Winner from Qualifying Round 1 at PNC Park
