What Does 4 For 4 Mean In Baseball?
The “4 for 4” baseball stat refers to a player who gets a hit in all four at-bats in a game. It’s a rare feat, and one that’s usually only accomplished by the game’s best hitters.
Four Balls
In baseball, four balls means a walk. The batter is awarded first base. A walk is also sometimes referred to as a base on balls.
A walk
In baseball, a walk ( WB ) is when a batter receives four balls (i.e., pitched balls that are not swung at and not called strikes) from the pitcher. After receiving four balls, the batter becomes a runner, and is entitled to attempt to advance to first base without being put out.
A base on balls does not count as a hit or an at bat for a batter but does count as a time on base and, therefore, raises the player’s on-base percentage. A batter who draws a base on balls is commonly said to have been “walked” by the pitcher. When the batter is walked, runners advance one base without risk of being put out, except when there are two outs with fewer than two runners on base (in which case the trailing runner may attempt to advance only as far as second base).
A hit by pitch
In baseball, a hit by pitch (HBP) is when a batter is touched by a pitched ball without swinging at it and is awarded first base as a result. A batter can also be awarded first base if he is intentionallyhit by a pitch, even if he does attempt to avoid being hit. Being hit by a pitch is often caused by a pitcher missing his target when throwing to the batter, but intentional HBP may occur as well.
4 for 4 in baseball means that the batter was hit by four pitches in four consecutive at-bats. This is an extremely rare feat, and has only been accomplished 14 times in Major League Baseball history.
Four Strikes
In baseball, a “4 for 4” day occurs when a batter gets four hits in four at-bats. This is a very rare feat, as most batters only average around two hits per game. A 4 for 4 day is considered to be a great day for any hitter.
An out
In baseball, four strikes is an out. This happens when a batter gets three strikes in a row and then the fourth pitch is a ball that is not caught by the catcher. If the batter hits the ball on the fourth pitch, it is a foul ball and he gets another chance to hit it.
A strikeout
A strikeout happens when a pitcher throws any combination of three swinging or looking strikes to a batter. (A foul ball on any of those pitches doesn’t reset the count.) With two strikes, batters have to be careful not to get strike three and thus strike out.
There are different types of strikeouts, but the most common is called the “three-pitch” or “called” strikeout, which happens when the batter swings at or takes a pitch for strike three. This is by far the most common type of strikeouts, especially in Major League Baseball.
