This was the first time the two teams had met in men’s basketball. UC Merced is a Division III school, while UC Santa Barbara is a Division I school.

The Bobcats led by as many as 17 points in the second half and held on for the victory. Sophomore guard Cesar Perez led UC Merced with 20 points, while junior forward Armani Collins added 18 points and eight rebounds. Senior guard Kyle Creighton scored 15 points and junior guard Darnel Shakes had 10 points.
