While it may be hard to believe, many NBA players have filed for bankruptcy. In fact, 60% of former NBA players are broke within five years of retirement, according to a 2009 Sports Illustrated report.

1. Latrell Sprewell: Once upon a time, Spree was one of the best Shooting Guards in the NBA. He made $97 million during his career but squandered it all on bad investments, child support and luxury gifts for friends and family. In 2004, he was arrested for choking coach P.J. Carlesimo during a practice session. He then went on a rampage, destroying property in his home and eventually getting kicked out of the league. Today, Sprewell lives off of his $1.5 million annual pension from the NBA.
2. Derrick Coleman The No. 1 overall pick in the 1990 draft, Coleman earned more than $91 million during his career but blew it all on bad investments and lavish spending. He was even featured on an episode of “The Oprah Winfrey Show” in 2010 where he opened up about his money problems. Today, Coleman is reportedly living off of food stamps and disability payments.
3. Vin Baker: Another former All-Star, Baker made more than $100 million during his career but lost it all to alcohol addiction and bad investments. His fall from grace was so precipitous that he had to take a job as a janitor at Starbucks in 2012 just to make ends meet. He has since gotten sober and is now working as a TV analyst for the Bucks broadcast team
