From Small-Town Star to Big-Time College Hoops

Anthony Benard had a collegiate Basketball Journey that took him from a small Division II school in his hometown to a big-time Division I program and eventually to the pros.

The 6-foot-5 guard was a star at Gannon University in Erie, Pennsylvania, where he was named the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West Player of the Year as a senior.

He then transferred to St. Bonaventure University, a Division I school in Olean, New York, where he sat out a year due to NCAA transfer rules.

As a junior, Bernard averaged 11 points and four rebounds per game for the Bonnies. He upped those numbers to 16 points and five rebounds as a senior, earning Atlantic 10 All-Conference Second Team honors.

After going undrafted in the NBA draft Bernard played professionally in France and Israel before returning to the States to play in the NBA G League

Learning the ropes in the NBA

Anthony Benard had always dreamed of playing in the NBA. As a kid, he would watch the games on TV and imagine himself out there on the court, playing alongside his idols. When he finally got his chance to play in the NBA, he was ecstatic.

But it didn’t take long for Anthony to realize that playing in the NBA was not going to be as easy as he thought. He was quickly learning that the competition was much tougher than anything he had ever faced before. Now, looking back at his journey, Anthony is proud of how far he has come and is grateful for all the lessons he has learned along the way.

A European Adventure

Anthony Benard had a successful college basketball career, but he always dreamed of playing professionally. After a few years of trying to make it in the United States he finally got his chance to play in Europe.

Benard spent two years playing in the top league in Germany, and then had a brief stint in Turkey before moving to Italy. He’s been playing in Italy for the past five years, and he’s now one of the Top Players in the league.

Despite being thousands of miles from home, Benard has found a second family in his teammates and the Italian fans. He says that playing basketball in Europe has been an amazing experience, and he’s grateful for every opportunity that he’s had.

Finding a Home in the D-League

After going undrafted in 2009, Anthony Benard made his way through various foreign leagues before landing with the Reno Bighorns of the D-League in 2012. He quickly became one of the team’s most reliable players, appearing in all 50 games and averaging 10.1 points and 3.6 rebounds per contest. His strong play helped the Bighorns earn a playoff berth, and he was rewarded with a spot on the league’s All-Defensive team

Benard’s journey to the D-League was not an easy one. He began his professional career in his native France, but he was unable to find consistent playing time He then moved to Italy, where he had some success with Napoli, but he eventually fell out of favor with the Coaching Staff there. After stops in Turkey and Russia, Benard finally arrived in Reno and has found a home with the Bighorns.

Benard is just one example of many players who have used the D-League as a springboard to success. The league has become an important development tool for young players and has helped many of them realize their dreams of playing in the NBA.

The Road to Recovery

And then, against all odds, Anthony made an unlikely comeback. He was offered a spot on a semi-professional basketball team and he took it. Now, at the age of 32, Anthony is back on the court and living his dream. He is proof that anything is possible if you never give up on yourself.

The NBA Dream

When he was in high school he began to work hard to make his dream a reality. He practiced shooting and dribbling every day, and played on his school’s Varsity Basketball team.

Eventually, his hard work paid off. He was recruited by several colleges to play on their basketball teams He chose to play for Georgetown University and then went on to be drafted by the Indiana Pacers in the NBA Draft

However, his journey was not over yet. Benard had to prove himself all over again, this time against the best basketball players in the world. He worked hard and continued to improve his game, and eventually became a regular starter for the Pacers.

Looking back on his journey, Benard is grateful for all of the challenges he faced along the way. Without them, he would not have become the player or person he is today.

Today, Anthony is one of the top players in the country. He’s helped lead his team to several Championship Games and he’s even been named MVP of the NCAA tournament
