John Collins was born in Edina, Minnesota, on September 23, 1997. He was a highly touted recruit, ranked as the #12 Power Forward and #40 player in the class of 2016 by 247Sports.com. Collins played his High School basketball at Cardinal Gibbons high school in Raleigh, North Carolina As a senior, he averaged 19.2 points, 9.6 rebounds, and 3.0 blocks per game, leading his team to a 27-3 record and a berth in thestate semifinals. Collins was named the Cape Fear region Player of the Year and earned first-team All-State honors.
College Career
Collins played college basketball for Wake Forest University. He was a two-time All-ACC selection and was named the ACC Rookie of the Year in 2016. He was also a two-time winner of the ACC sixth man of the Year Award As a sophomore, he averaged 19.2 points and 9.8 rebounds per game and was named to the All-ACC first team.

Collins grew up in Bridgehampton, New York and attended Wendell Phillips Academy high school in Chicago, Illinois. He was a highly ranked recruit coming out of high school and committed to play College Basketball for the Wake Forest Demon Deacons.
Collins played three seasons for Wake Forest from 2015 to 2018. He was named the ACC Rookie of the Year after averaging 19.2 points and 9.8 rebounds per game as a freshman. He was named to the All-ACC Second Team as a sophomore and junior. Following his junior season, he declared for the 2018 NBA Draft and was selected in the first round with the 19th overall pick by the Atlanta Hawks

In high school Collins played basketball at Westlake high school in Fulton County, Georgia. He led his high school team to back-to-back State Championships as a junior and senior in 2015 and 2016. As a senior in 2016–17, he averaged 25 points and 16 rebounds per game en route to being named a McDonald’s All-American.
