Despite its non traditional status as a Basketball Mascot the husky has been a source of team spirit and support for the Vermont men’s basketball team The team’s husky, named KJ, attends all home games and travels to some away games. Fans can also get their own stuffed husky mascot to support the team.

The History of the Vermont Basketball Mascot

In the early 1900s, college basketball was a relatively new sport and teams were still trying to figure out what kind of image they wanted to project. Some schools went with fierce-looking animals, like the big cats that represent many NFL teams today. Others chose playful mascots that would make the fans smile.

The University Of Vermont was one of the latter. In 1905, they introduced their first ever mascot: a black bear cub named “Shem.”

Fans loved Shem and he quickly became a beloved part of Vermont basketball culture. For years, he would entertain crowds at games with his antics, including doing flips and shooting free throws (yes, really).

Shem continued to be the team’s mascot until 1936 when he tragically passed away. The school then decided to retire his image and replace him with a new bear mascot named “Hector.”
