The 10 funniest baseball Bloopers of All Time
1. In 2001, outfielder Moises Alou of the Chicago Cubs was victim to one of the most famous blooper reel moments in baseball history After making a catch near the stands, a wily fan reached out and interfered with Alou’s catch, causing him to drop the ball. The Cubs would go on to lose the game in controversial fashion, and the fan’s interference became an infamous moment in baseball lore.
2. In 2004, Boston Red Sox Left fielder Manny Ramirez made a spectacular catch on a line drive hit by Baltimore Orioles’ B.J. Surhoff. Ramirez appeared to make the catch cleanly, but as he fell to the ground, the ball popped out of his glove and rolled into foul territory The umpires ruled it a home run much to the dismay of Ramirez and the Red Sox
3. During a game between the New York Yankees and Tampa Bay Rays in 2007, Rays outfielder Rocco Baldelli made a sprinting catch of a fly ball hit by Yankees’ catcher Jorge Posada. As Baldelli slid into second base to make the catch, his cap flew off his head and into fair territory behind him. The ball bounced off Baldelli’s head and into foul territory, but because his cap had interfered with Posada’s batted ball umpires ruled it a do-over and Posada was awarded first base.
4. One of the most bizarre blooper reel moments occurred in 2008 when Chicago White Sox catcher A.J Pierzynski attempted to pick off Tampa Bay Rays’ baserunner Dioner Navarro at first base. Pierzynski threw to first baseman Paul Konerko who applied the tag, but replays showed that Navarro had beaten Konerko to the bag before Pierzynski had even released his throw! Umpires ruled that because Konerko had tagged Navarro before he reached first base, he was out regardless of whether he had beaten Pierzynski’s throw or not.
5. In 2009, Detroit Tigers outfielder 1280x1024 Carlton Fisk hit a walk-off home run against Kansas City Royals pitcher Joakim Soria that gave his team a 5-4 victory in Extra Innings As Fisk rounded third base and headed for home plate he inadvertently knocked over third base umpire Jim Joyce who was blocking his path home! Fortunately for Fisk, Joyce was not injured on the play and he was able to finish trotting around the bases for one of the more unusual game-ending plays in recent memory.
Number 10: Arod’s Blooper
Number 10 on our list of funniest baseball bloopers of all time is Alex Rodriguez’s blooper against the Red Sox in 2007. Arod was known for his great fielding abilities, but this play definitely wasn’t one of his best moments. The ball went under his glove and into the stands, allowing the runner to advance to second base. Arod’s blooper is definitely one of the most memorable moments in baseball history
Number 9: The Unassisted Triple Play
Number 9 on our list of the 10 funniest baseball bloopers of all time is the unassisted Triple Play
In case you’re not familiar with the term, an unassisted triple play is when a single player gets three outs in a single play. It’s incredibly rare, and it’s even more rare for it to happen in a funny way.
But that’s exactly what happened in this blooper from a minor league game between the Gwinnett Braves and the Durham Bulls Durham’s third baseman made a great diving stop on a grounder, then popped up and threw to second base to get the runner there. But the second baseman wasn’t paying attention and the ball went right through his legs. The runner at third base then realized what was happening and just took off for home plate The poor catcher had no idea what was going on and just stood there as the runner scored.
It was an amazing play and it just goes to show that even professional baseball players can have moments of complete stupidity.
Number 8: The Great Wall of China
Number 8 on our list of the Funniest Baseball Bloopers of all time is “The Great Wall of China.”
This blooper occurred during a game between the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Cincinnati Reds in 2008. Reds second baseman Brandon Phillips hit a pop fly to shallow left field where Dodgers outfielder Druw Jones made a running catch. But instead of throwing the ball back in, Jones ran toward the stands and threw the ball into the first row, hitting a fan in the face.
The fan, who was wearing a Chinese flag as a cape, fell to the ground and was attended to by security. He was not seriously injured, but his picture quickly made its way around the world and he became an internet sensation
Number 7: The Invisible Man
Infielder Brad Ausmus of the Houston Astros tries to make a play on a grounder hit by San Francisco Giant Ellis Burks in the seventh inning of their game at Minute Maid Park in Houston, Texas April 12, 2004. Number 6: The Human Rain Delay
In 2006, the Tampa Bay Devil Rays were facing the Baltimore Orioles in a game that was being televised nationally. During a rain delay, the teams’ Groundskeepers took to the field to prep the infield for play. However, one of the Devil Rays’ players, Rocco Baldelli, had other ideas.
Baldelli ran out onto the field, sliding into second base and pretending to be a rain delay himself. The other players followed suit, and soon the entire infield was covered in human rain delays The game eventually resumed, but not before Baldelli and his teammates had given everyone a good laugh.
Number 5: The Catcher’s Interference
This blooper comes from a game between the Colorado Rockies and the San Diego Padres in 2007. Colorado’s catcher, Yorvit Torrealba, was trying to throw out a baserunner at first, but he interfered with the first baseman’s glove, preventing him from catching the ball. The runner was safe and Torrealba was called for interference.
Number 4: The home run Derby
In the 2001 Home Run Derby Sammy Sosa hit a ball that got stuck in one of the pipes on top of the warehouse in right-center field at Turner Field. The ball was eventually retrieved by a member of the grounds crew, but not before Sosa had rounded the bases and finished his trot.
Number 3: The Great American Race
In a close race for third place, we have this 2002 blooper from then- Tampa Bay Devil Rays outfielder Randall Simon. Simon took a swing at a flying sausage during a Milwaukee Brewers game, knocking the 14-pound link off the head of the mascot who was donning a large, bobble-headed likeness of former Brewers star Cecil Cooper. The poor mascot tumbled to the ground, and had to be helped off the field by the Brewers’ training staff. Thankfully, he was not injured in the bizarre incident.
Number 2: The Blooper Reel
Number 2: The Blooper Reel
We all love a good blooper reel, and there are plenty of great ones out there. But when it comes to baseball bloopers, there’s just something special about them.
Maybe it’s because we can all relate to the feeling of being stuck in the outfield with the sun in our eyes, or slipping on the wet grass. Or maybe it’s because we’ve all dreamed of making that diving catch or hitting that home run only to have it all go wrong in the most embarrassing way possible.
Whatever the reason, there’s just something about a baseball blooper that makes us laugh every time. So without further ado, here are the 10 funniest baseball bloopers of all time.
Number 1: The Grand Slam
Number 1: The Grand Slam
This blooper is from a 1995 game between the Chicago Cubs and the Cincinnati Reds Cubs player, Steve Buechele, hits a grand slam but the ball hits the speaker in left field and pops back out onto the field. As Buechele rounds the bases, he high-fives all of his teammates, but by the time he gets to home plate his Grand Slam has been turned into a single.
