How the team is looking

The 2017 season was a tough one for the GCU Baseball Team
They had a lot of injuries, and their record showed it.
They are looking to come back stronger in 2018, and these are the guys that will be helping them do it.

Who to watch out for

As the 2021 season approaches, Grand Canyon University’s baseball roster is set and there are some new talented freshmen joining the squad. The Lopes will look to defend their WAC championship from last year and make a run at the NCAA tournament Here are some of the new faces on the team that you should keep an eye on.

Freshman pitcher Matt Johnson was a highly touted recruit out of High School and he is expected to make an immediate impact on the pitching staff. He has a four-pitch repertoire that includes a low-90s fastball, a curveball, a slider, and a changeup.

Another freshman pitcher to keep an eye on is Tyler Beuerlein. He was also a highly recruited prospect out of high school and he has a three-pitch repertoire that includes a low-90s fastball, a curveball, and a changeup. He will also be competing for a spot in the starting rotation.

Infielder Jake Rothwell is another talented freshman that will be looking to make an impact on the team. He is a versatile player that can play both second base and third base. He hits for average and has some pop in his bat.

Outfielder/infielder Ryan Aguiar is another versatile player that can play all over the diamond. He is expected to see time in both the infield and outfield this season. He has good speed and steals bases when he gets on base.

The team’s strengths

The team’s strengths this season will be its pitching and defense. The team has several experienced pitchers who have been successful at the collegiate level and who should be able to anchor the staff. The team also has good depth in the bullpen. defensively, the team is returning most of its starters from last season, including its entire outfield. The team should be very solid defensively.

The team’s weaknesses

One common denominator for most of the team is a lack of plate discipline and this will need to be addressed if they want to have consistent success against good pitching. They also need to do a better job offensively with runners in scoring position and take advantage of opportunities when they arise. The team’s defense was an issue at times last season and this will need to be shored up if they want to make a run at the conference title
