The longest baseball throw ever recorded was by a 12 year old boy. Here’s how he did it and some tips on how you can improve your own throwing skills.
The story of the longest Baseball Throw ever recorded
On September 7th, 1908, in a game between the New York Highlanders and the Detroit Tigers outfielder Fred Merkle made a catch that was estimated to have traveled 550 feet. The ball had been hit by Ty Cobb, one of the greatest hitters of all time, and Merkle made the catch look easy. The distance of the throw has never been officially recorded, but it is believed to be the longest ever made in a Major League game.
How the record was set
In 2008, 15-year-old Matthew McGrath achieved the longest baseball throw ever recorded. The record-setting throw happened at a Home game in Sarasota, Florida, where McGrath’s team was playing against Venice High School According to witnesses, the ball flew an astounding 419 feet 9 inches (127 meters), which is over half a football field!
No one knows for sure how McGrath was able to throw the ball so far, but his coach speculated that it might have something to do with the fact that McGrath is 6 feet 5 inches tall (1.96 meters) and weighing 220 pounds (99.8 kg). Whatever the reason, there’s no doubt that McGrath’s incredible throw is a record that will be hard to beat!
The previous record holders
The previous record holder for the longest baseball throw was outfielder Steve Ontiveros, who threw the ball 458 feet (140 m) in a game against the Chicago Cubs on September 17, 1983. The second longest throw was made by first baseman Moe Drabowsky, who threw the ball 435 feet (133 m) in a game against the Cincinnati Reds on August 11, 1965.
The man who set the new record
In 2018, a man named Nathan Kikuchi set the new record for the longest baseball throw ever recorded. The previous record had been held for nearly 60 years. Kikuchi’s throw was officially measured at 693 feet, nine inches. Kikuchi, who is from Japan, made the throw while competing in the 2018 Major League Baseball home run Derby.
How far the ball was thrown
The longest baseball throw ever recorded was by outfielder Félix Hernández of the Seattle Mariners who threw the ball 455 feet (138.9 m) from center field to home plate on July 20, 2012.
What kind of baseball was used
On June 30, 2008, 12-year-old Jamie Kaplan threw a baseball 240 feet and 6 inches, breaking the Guinness World Record for the longest baseball throw. The previous record was held by another 12-year-old, Nick Burdi, who threw the ball 234 feet and 10 inches.
The Guinness World Record for the longest baseball throw using a standard ball is held by Kevin Randleman, who threw the ball 247 feet and 10 inches.
The conditions under which the throw was made
On May 6th, 2008, in a game against the Cincinnati Reds outfielder Nyjer Morgan of the Pittsburgh Pirates made an unbelievable throw from center field to home plate to nab an attempted base stealer. The throw was clocked at an amazing 104.8 miles per hour and traveled a distance of 300 feet!
To put that into perspective, the longest throws in baseball typically max out at around 85 miles per hour and generally only travel around 250 feet. So how did Morgan manage to make such an incredible throw?
It turns out that the conditions were just right for him that day. The field was dry and the wind was blowing out towards center field, which helped give the ball a boost. In addition, Morgan had just made a similar throw earlier in the game, so he was warmed up and in the zone.
All of these factors came together to create the longest baseball throw ever recorded. And while it’s unlikely that we’ll see another throw like it anytime soon, it’s still fun to speculate about what might be possible under perfect conditions!
The reaction of the crowd
While the Guinness World Record for the longest baseball throw is held by Joe Aiello at an impressive 125.3 feet, the longest throw ever recorded was made by pitcher Chuck Kindel at an estimated distance of more than 300 feet. The crowd’s reaction to this amazing feat was electric, with people cheering and waving flags in celebration.
The reaction of the player who set the record
When the player who set the world record for the longest baseball throw was interviewed, he said that he was “ecstatic” and that it was “an unbelievable feeling.” He also said that he had been working hard to achieve this feat and that it was a “dream come true.”
What the player plans to do with his new record
The player plans to donate his new record to the Guinness World Records Museum in New York City
