The 1985 Villanova team was one of the best college basketball teams of all time. The team was led by Head Coach Rollie Massimino and featured future NBA players like Harold Pressley, Mark Jackson, Ed Pinckney, and Dwayne McClain. The Wildcats finished the season with a record of 26-10 and made it to the NCAA tournament as a #6 seed. The 1985 NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Tournament involved 64 schools playing in single-elimination play to determine the National Champion of men’s NCAA Division I college basketball It began on March 14, 1985, and ended with the Championship game on April 1 in Lexington, Kentucky. A total of 63 games were played.
The Final Four consisted of Villanova (which won the tournament), Georgetown, St. John’s, and Memphis State Memphis State (now known as the University of Memphis) made its first (and, as of 2019, only) appearance in the Final Four.Georgetown was making its third trip to the Final Four (and its first since 1981), while St. John’s was making its first appearance since 1952 and only its second overall. This was also the first tournament since 1969 without UCLA participating (UCLA had made it to every tournament from 1968 to 1984 inclusive).
This was Villanova’s sixth NCAA Tournament appearance and first championship win.
