60s Basketball Players

The NBA was a pioneer in the development of basketball, creating rules and innovations that would go on to shape the game for years to come. But before all of that, there were players who paved the way for what we know today. Who are some of these players? What did they do? And how did they impact the NBA as it is today?

Bill Russell

Bill Russell was one of the most decorated players in the history of the NBA. During his 13-year career, he won 11 championships with the Boston Celtics including two three-peats (1959-1966). He was also a five-time NBA MVP and a 12-time All-Star. His accomplishments helped change the game of basketball and pave the way for future generations of African American players

Wilt Chamberlain

Wilt Chamberlain 1960s basketball player for the NBA. He played for the Philadelphia/San Francisco Warriors the Philadelphia 76ers and the Los Angeles Lakers. He was born on August 21, 1936, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Chamberlain was a versatile player who was able to play all five positions on the court. He is one of only four players in NBA history to score 100 points in a single game. Chamberlain retired from the NBA in 1973 and died on October 12, 1999, at the age of 63.

Oscar Robertson

Oscar Robertson was one of the most dominant players of the 1960s. He was a 6’5″ point guard who played for the Cincinnati Royals from 1960 to 1970. He is the only player in NBA history to average a triple-double for an entire season. In 1961-1962, he averaged 30.8 points, 12.5 rebounds, and 11.4 assists per game He was also a nine-time All-Star and was voted MVP in 1964. Another one of his notable accomplishments is that he was a member of the gold medal winning US Olympic team in 1968.

Robertson was an incredibly gifted scorer, rebounder, and passer. He is widely considered to be one of the greatest players in NBA history

Jerry West

Jerry West was one of the most prolific scorers in NBA history A member of the Lakers team that dominated the NBA in the 1960s, West was an All-Star in each of his 14 seasons and was voted as one of the 50 greatest players in NBA history He is also well-known for his silhouette being used as the NBA logo

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar is one of the most iconic basketball players in history. He played for the Milwaukee Bucks and the Los Angeles Lakers during his 20-year career in the NBA. Abdul-Jabbar was a six-Ime Nba champion, a five-time NBA MVP and a 19-time NBA All-Star He is also the All-time leading scorer in NBA history with 38,387 points.

John Havlicek

One of the most prolific players of the 1960s decade in the NBA was Jerry West who played for the Los Angeles Lakers West was an All-Star every year during the decade, and was named NBA Finals MVP in 1969. Other notable players from the 1960s include Bill Russell who won 11 championships with the Boston Celtics and Wilt Chamberlain who set numerous individual records, including averaging 50 points per game during the 1961-62 season.

Elvin Hayes

Elvin Hayes (born November 17, 1945) is an American retired professional basketball player and radio analyst who played for the Houston Mavericks and San Diego Clippers. He was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1990.

Hayes’s signature performance came in Game 5 of the 1968 NBA Finals against the New York Knicks in which he scored 39 points and grabbed 15 rebounds to lead the Mavericks to a 112-107 victory. That performance helped him earn MVP honors for the series. The game, which was played at Madison Square Garden is widely considered one of the most significant in NBA history

Willis Reed

Willis Reed (born 1942) is a retired American basketball player coach and General Manager He spent his entire professional playing career with the New York Knicks (19641974), winning two NBA championships Reed is a member of the NBA’s 50th Anniversary All-Time Team, was voted as one of the 50 greatest players in NBA history and was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1982. In 1996, Reed was chosen as one of the NBA’s Top 50 players of all time.

Reed was originally drafted by the San Francisco Warriors in the second round of the 1964 NBA draft but was waived before appearing in a game for them. He was then acquired by the Knicks in a Dispersal Draft following the team’s relocation to New York City Reed quickly became a cornerstone for the team, helping lead them to their first NBA Championship title in 197071.

During his time with the Knicks, Reed earned numerous accolades and accolades including being named to seven All-Star teams, winning two NBA Championships being named the NBA Finals MVP in 1970 and 1973, and being named the NBA MVP in 197071. He has his number 19 retired by both the Knicks and also by his alma mater Grambling State University Reed currently serves as a Special Adviser for basketball operations for the Brooklyn Nets

Connie Hawkins

Connie Hawkins played in the American Basketball Association (ABA) for the Pittsburgh Pipers and the Phoenix Suns He was inducted to the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1992.

Jerry West played in the National Basketball Association (NBA) for the Los Angeles Lakers He was inducted to the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1980.

Willis Reed played in the NBA for the New York Knicks He was inducted to the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1982.

Nate Thurmond

Nate Thurmond was one of the best players of the 1960s. He played for the Cleveland Cavaliers San Francisco Warriors, and Chicago Bulls He was a 7-time All-Star and a 5-time All-NBA selection. Nate Thurmond was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1985.
