2019 NHL Redraft: Who Will Go Where?

As the NHL off-season comes to a close, teams are starting to turn their attention to the 2019 NHL Entry Draft The Entry Draft is always an exciting time for hockey fans as it gives them a chance to see the future stars of the sport. This year’s draft is no different, as there are a number of highly-touted prospects who could go on to have successful NHL careers.

With that being said, let’s take a look at how the first round of the 2019 NHL Entry Draft could shake out. Keep in mind that these are just predictions and anything could happen on draft day.

1) New Jersey Devils – Jack Hughes, C, USA national U18 Team

The Devils are in desperate need of a franchise center and they’ll get just that in Hughes. He’s an exceptional talent and should be able to step into the NHL right away.

2) New York Rangers – Kaapo Kakko, RW, TPV Tampere (Liiga)

Kakko is one of the most complete prospects in this year’s draft. He has great size, skill and vision and should be able to make an immediate impact with the Rangers.

3) Chicago Blackhawks – Bowen Byram, D, Vancouver Giants (WHL)

Byram is one of the best defensive prospects in this year’s class. He’s an excellent skater and has good size for a defenseman. He should be able to step into the Blackhawks’ lineup right away and provide some much-needed help on the blue line

4) Colorado Avalanche (from Ottawa Senators) – Dylan Cozens, C/RW, Lethbridge Hurricanes (WHL)

Cozens is a great two-way player who can play both center and wing. He’s a good skater with good vision and hockey sense. He should be able to step into the Avalanche lineup and make an immediate impact.

2019 NHL Redraft: The Next One

With the NHL regular season over and the Stanley Cup Playoffs in Full Swing it’s time to start thinking about next year. The 2019 NHL Entry Draft will take place on June 21-22 in Vancouver, and it’s shaping up to be one of the most important drafts in recent memory. With so many young stars making an impact at the NHL level, there is a lot of excitement surrounding the potential for this draft class Who will go where? Here is my latest 2019 NHL Redraft:

1) New Jersey Devils Jack Hughes, C, USA NTDP (USHL)
The Devils have been patiently rebuilding their franchise over the past few years and it looks like their patience is about to pay off. They have a young core of players that includes Nico Hischier, Will Butcher, Jesper Bratt, and Pavel Zacha. Now they add Jack Hughes, who is widely considered to be the best player in this draft class Hughes is an exceptional talent and has the potential to be a generational player. He would be a perfect fit for the Devils as they continue their push towards becoming a Stanley Cup contenders.

2) New York Rangers Kaapo Kakko, RW, TPS (Finland)
The Rangers are another team that has been patiently rebuilding their team and they are also close to becoming Stanley Cup contenders. Kakko is a talented forward who has the potential to be a star at the NHL level. He would be a great addition to the Rangers’ lineup and would help them take the next step towards becoming a championship-caliber team.

3) Chicago Blackhawks Dylan Cozens, C/RW, Lethbridge Hurricanes (WHL)
The Blackhawks are starting to feel the effects of age and injuries catching up to them. They need to start getting younger and more talented players if they want to remain competitive in the coming years. Cozens is an extremely talented forward who has the potential to be a top-line player in the NHL. He would be a great addition to the Blackhawks’ lineup and could help them stay competitive for years to come.

4) Colorado Avalanche (from Ottawa Senators): Bowen Byram, D, Vancouver Giants (WHL)
The Avalanche were one of the biggest surprise teams in the NHL this season and they look like they are here to stay. They have a young and talented core of players that includes Nathan MacKinnon, Mikko Rantanen, Gabriel Landeskog, Tyson Barrie, and Vladislav Kamenev. They now add Bowen Byram who is widely considered to be the best defenseman in this Draft Class Byram is an exceptional talent who has all of the tools necessary to be a top-pairing defenseman at the NHL level. He would be a great addition to an already solid Avalanche lineup and could help them take another step towards becoming Stanley Cup contenders.

2019 NHL Redraft: Dark Horses

The 2019 NHL redraft is set to be one of the most interesting in years. There are a number of dark horse candidates who could go anywhere from the top-five to the bottom of the first round. Here are five of the most intriguing prospects in this year’s class.

1) Vasili Podkolzin – RW, SKA St. Petersburg (KHL)
Podkolzin is one of the most talented forwards in this year’s class, but his KHL contract could keep him out of the NHL for a few years. He’s a strong skater with good size and a nose for the net. He could be a top-six forward for a contending team down the road.

2) Dylan Cozens – C, Lethbridge Hurricanes (WHL)
Cozens is a big center with good skating ability and offensive upside. He put up 84 points in 68 games last season and should be a top-five pick. He could be a key piece on a contending team’s middle-six in the future.

3) Kirby Dach – C, Saskatoon Blades (WHL)
Dach is another big center with good offensive ability. He had 73 points in 62 games last season and is projected to go in the top-ten. He needs to work on his defensive game, but he has the potential to be a first-line center on a good team down the road.

4) Matthew Boldy – LW, Boston College Eagles (NCAA)
Boldy is an incredible skater with good size and an impressive scoring touch. He had 40 points in 36 games as a freshman last season and should be a high pick in this year’s draft. He has star potential and could develop into a top-six forward for a contender sooner rather than later.

5) Peyton Krebs – LW, Kootenay Ice (WHL)
Krebs is an excellent skater with good vision and playmaking ability. He missed significant time last season due to injury, but he still managed to put up 48 points in 44 games. He’ll need to prove that he can stay healthy at the next level, but he has first-line potential if he can stay on the ice.

In the 2019 NHL Draft there were a few players who team scouts and general managers may have been sleeping on. These are players who may not have been talked about as much as the top prospects but who have the potential to be just as successful in the NHL. Here are a few of those sleepers:

Peyton Krebs, C, Winnipeg Ice (WHL)
Krebs is a gifted offensive player but there are questions about his ability to produce at the NHL level. He’s undersized (5’11”, 180 pounds) and he doesn’t have elite speed or strength. There are concerns that he could be overmatched by bigger, stronger defenders in the NHL.

Bowen Byram, D, Vancouver Giants (WHL)
Byram is a talented defenseman with good size (6’1”, 192 pounds) and skating ability. However, there are questions about his hockey IQ and decision-making ability. He also needs to improve his strength and lower-body power.

Vitali Kravtsov, RW, Traktor Chelyabinsk (KHL)
Kravtsov is a tall (6’3”), skilled winger with good hands and a lethal shot. However, he hasn’t been able to produce consistently at the KHL level and there are concerns about his work ethic and commitment to defense. He could be a boom-or-bust type of prospect in the NHL.
