In 1943, Barden sold the Royals to a group of local businessmen who renamed the team the Cincinnati Olympia Brewers. The Olympia Brewers were coached by Ray Meyer, who had been an Assistant Coach at Notre Dame under legendary coach George Keogan. Meyer coached several future NBA players at Notre Dame including George Mikan and Johnny Dee.

Meyer led the Olympia Brewers to two AAU National Championships in 1944 and 1945. In 1946, Meyer left coaching to become General Manager of the Chicago American Gears of the National Basketball Association (NBA), which would later become today’s Chicago Bulls franchise. Meyer hired Dee as his Head Coach and signed several Olympia Brewers players to play for the Gears, including Rohland, Louie Dampier and Connie Dierking.
