Appo Baseball is the Place to Be: The History

Appo Baseball is the Place to Be: The History Appomattox Baseball Complex (“Appo”) is located in the central Virginia town of Appomattox, just a few miles from where Confederate General Robert E. Lee surrendered his army to Union General Ulysses S. Grant, effectively ending the Civil War

This historic ballpark was built in 1939 by the Works Progress Administration as part of President Franklin Roosevelt’s New Deal initiatives. It was one of over 1,500 ballparks constructed nationwide during this time period. The Appomattox ballpark is significant not only for its connection to American history, but also for its architecture and design.

The Appomattox ballpark is built in the “Municipal” style of architecture, which was popular for ballparks and other public buildings constructed during the 1930s. This style is characterized by its simple design and lack of superfluous ornamentation. The stadium consists of a concrete grandstand that surrounds a grass field. The grandstand has apsidal ends, which give the stadium its characteristic “bow-tie” shape.

The Appomattox ballpark was home to several semi-professional and amateur baseball teams over the years. In 1939, the Appomattox Cardinals were founded as a semi-professional team and played their home games at the stadium until 1946. The Cardinals were succeeded by the Appomattox Red Sox who played at the ballpark from 1947 to 1949.

The Red Sox were followed by the Appomattox Astros (1950-1951), the Appomattox Yankees (1952), the Lynchburg White Sox (1953), and finally the Petersburg Generals (1954-1959). The Generals were affiliated with Major League Baseball’s Chicago White Sox and featured several future big leaguers on their roster, including Hall of Famer Hoyt Wilhelm and All-Star Early Wynn.

After 1959, professional baseball left Appomattox but amateur and semi-pro teams continued to play at the ballpark into the 21st century. In 2002, local residents formed a non-profit organization called “Friends of Municipal Stadium” with the mission of renovating and preserving the historic ballpark.

Since then, Friends of Municipal Stadium has raised over $200,000 for renovations which have included new bleachers, a new press box, a new concession stand and a new entry gate with plaza area honoring Cal Baseball greats such as Earl Weaver and Cal Ripken Jr.

In 2009, Friends of Municipal Stadium partnered with Lynchburg College to create an internship program for students interested in learning about historic preservation and non-profit management. To date, over 30 Lynchburg college students have interned with Friends of Municipal Stadium
